The New York City Council pushed through two controversial bills Wednesday that will see a ban on solitary confinement in Big Apple jails and force cops to file reports for every street stop they carry out — even the low-level ones.
The two bills, which were vehemently opposed by Mayor Eric Adams along with police and jail guard unions, passed with a veto-proof majority — meaning the legislation will likely not be quashed by Hizzoner and will become law.
“The New York City Council has taken action today that, if implemented, will unquestionably make our city less safe,” the mayor said in a statement about the passage of the so-called “How Many Stops Act.”

Jails and prisons have their own little culture to deal with troublemakers. Guards often look the other way in these cases.
I have no problem with body cams, dash cams and cameras in police stations...including in interrogation rooms. Cameras protect the cops, they protect innocent civilians and they even protect suspects. The only problem I have with them is that when a video makes the cops look bad the cameras always seem to malfunction.
More: If you don’t already know, look up ‘shot-callers slang’. These guys are the ones who ACTUALLY run prisons. In jails I think they are called the House Man.
If it's truthful recording then yes. However, I can see where lots of these "recordings" will get lost.
I read a study on violence in prison. Some people have a huge personal space envelope. There isn’t enough room in the average corridor for another person to pass them without violating their personal space and therefore being attacked. These people must be kept isolated from others to prevent injury.
I talked to a prison guard at the gym. A man they’d released the day before murdered someone an hour after being released. It was just some guy who got in his way. The guard said they had all been warned to never, under any circumstance, turn their back on the prisoner because he would kill them. He was released because he had served his time, but the entire legal system knew what he’d do when he got out.
The council is full of people who have never had to deal with the real world.
“However, I see a possible solution AND a possible money-making opportunity: Devise software that hangs off their body cams that automatically files a report.”
It would be too honest. Can’t fudge or twist it into something it is not.
The “software” would need speech generation and recognition to ask and record the poor tourist’s self-reported age, race and chosen gender.
So much for the tourist’s privacy in the techno-dystopia you are imagining.
AI is bringing it anyways. Might as well use it for something good.
The only way to record the information is to ask every contact(everyone walking down the sidewalk) for identification. Some may even require frisking...for their own safety.
I give it three days.

Have to see through these things, they are never what they seem. The Solitary thing is not about compassion or personal space. They will use this to open the door to legally house more than just one in those solitary cells and make room for even more bodies in the prison.
No! That is just excusing and helping to spread its inevitable abuse!
Have to document every street stop? Liberal advocates of this idiocy might not like the logical consequence: “Papiers, bitte!”
What’s wrong with the cops recording their encounters? If they’re not doing anything wrong then they have nothing to hide, right?
Isn’t that what they say to us when they stop us and want to violate our 4th and 5th Amendment rights?
“Jails and prisons have their own little culture to deal with troublemakers. Guards often look the other way in these cases.”
That’s how you want things to go? Sure about that?

Speeds up the process of people making up their mind....exit NY City for peace of mind.
True.
Another reason not to go to NYC.
Why bother spending two minutes stopping a shoplifter if you have to spend 2 hours doing paperwork?
