Only about half of young Americans in a poll released Wednesday say democracy is the greatest form of government.

A poll from The Economist/YouGov shows that among U.S. adults surveyed, support for democracy is strongest among older Americans, but it declines in every subsequent younger age bracket β€” with the weakest levels of support among adults younger than 45.

Only 54 percent of U.S. adults ages 18-29 agree with the statement, β€œDemocracy is the greatest form of government,” including 21 percent who agree strongly and 34 percent who agree somewhat. Another 34 percent say they neither agree nor disagree, and 12 percent say they disagree.

Well, there’s Churchill’s adage that democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the other ones tried.

Yes, we are a republic.

China is a democracy. Cuba is a democracy. North Korea is a democracy, etc.

We are NOT a democracy.

“We are a REPUBLIC damn it.”

Yes, but the people conducting the polls are too ignorant to know it. The young people have never even heard the term.

Most of the young people in the US are waltzing toward totalitarianism but are too busy watching the latest TikTok to notice or care.

We have too damn much democracy. It’s destroying the republic.

It has devolved into ochlocracy.

“We are a REPUBLIC damn it.”

A CONSTITUTIONAL Republic, to be more precise.

Of which ours is a type of democracy, in that the ultimate power rests with the People, through their chosen representatives (at least in theory).

A pure democracy is simply tyranny by the majority. No thanks.

In the limit as time approaches infinity, all forms of government approach Kakistocracy.

Sounds right to me. We have had a varying degree of fascism (defined as government control of privately owned property) for the last 20 years or so and they believe that to be β€œdemocracy.” Why wouldn’t they reject it? Unfortunately the same propaganda that led them to believe our current system is β€œdemocracy” also leads them to believe our current government is aligned with our founding principles.

“Democracy”. as a form of government, has been defined over and over, and yet, no two definitions quite agree with each other, and some are diametrically opposite of each other.

“Representative republic” most nearly agrees with my personal vision. and even that is subject to distortion and abuse.

But “One man, one vote, one way, one time”, is no way to run a railroad, either. Most often, the “Golden Rule” applies.

Them as got the gold make the rules.

It looks to me like we are coming to the end of Democracy as an effective form of government. The form is visible, but it is mostly pretense.

The founders of this country had a very low opinion of Democracy. I believe that opinion was justified.

We have also very little remaining as a Republic form of government. It has been replaced by a stifling army of bureaucrats ruled by an executive Kleptocracy.

We are better off when fools and knaves cannot control our lives. The system we have in place today is not working.

Exactly. I am so utterly sick of the total stupidity and ignorance of so many. The USA has never been a “democracy”. We are a Representative Republic. Sure - there are some democratic components, such as the right to vote. The 17th Amendment was one of the most direct assaults on our form of government made so far. The entire point of the Senate being made up of members sent by state legislatures was part of the important checks and balances of our Republican form of government.

No amendment ot the US Constitution is more in need of being repealed than the 17th Amendment.

Lighten up. Sometimes the word democracy is used to mean a representative government in general.

Most young people nowadays can't even do basic math, so they certainly don't know the difference between a republic and a democracy.
