These monuments were intended to heal a severely divided nation. We were killing each other after all.
Welcoming the "Rebs" back into the country versus beating them into submission was the best solution.
BTW, my ancestors fought for the North.
Tearing down the monuments will only further divide us.

When I was taught about the Civil War in middle school it was “The War Of Northern Aggression”.
It was about states rights (the South) vs. federalism (the North) Discussion of slavery came later.
I tend to believe what I was taught back then was true and I can understand the South’s stance.
