The Pentagon's two-year Replicator program to develop a stockpile of drones has its skeptics in the private sector, mostly because of the lack of direct funding for it.
"It's just very disorganized and confusing," a tech company executive told Politico, because it is "not actually associated with any dollars to make things happen."
The program intends to help the U.S. catch up with China on autonomous weapons and technology.
"For the first time ever from a military hardware perspective, we are five to seven years behind our near-peer adversaries in a critical kinetic piece of technology," a former defense official told Politico.

The chaos will mean that a number of corruptocrats and contractors will be able to steal from the taxpayers with both hands.
Just more defense fear mongering for $$$$.
170 something Billion short of a TRILLION dollars for defense and this news outfit expects me to believe this tripe?
They’ve been stuck on a small technological roadblock: they haven’t figured out how to power a drone with renewable energy.
“For the first time ever from a military hardware perspective, we are five to seven years behind our near-peer adversaries in a critical kinetic piece of technology,” a former defense official told Politico.
I like how these guys describe China as “Near-Peer”, when it is the USA which is now behind.
This Regime is no longer capable of doing anything. They have years of delays to produce minimal amounts of artillery ammunition.
It is clear from the Ukraine War that drones are the second most important thing behind artillery, and they are now years behind and unable to even put together a program to start trying to catch up.
Military Acquisitions is totally FUBAR.
They basically spend money. It’s not clear that they really expect to get anything for the money they spend. They just spend it.
I think you got it.
I believe it. Nobody is in charge of anything, everyone in government just does enough to stay on the gravy train, and maybe catch another. Career military may be the last exception, but they follow the chain of command and the chain isn’t connected to anything secure.
They have to make a list of possible tasks.
The things should be able to be controlled remotely. That means frequency agility and frequency hopping.
Should be able to pick out trees, power lines, rivers, trenches, artillery pieces, airplanes and tanks.
Should be able to be given areas to avoid.
Should be able to navigate by GPS, sun, stars and received signals(TV, radio, cell towers, enemy military transmitters).
Should be able to identify and send back possibly interesting images.
“They have years of delays to produce minimal amounts of artillery ammunition.”
I suspect the problem was dealt with well in early 1942.
The R&D has to come before manufacturing.
They could do things then. The Detroit Arsenal Tank factory was built in 8 months and started producing tanks in May 1942.
One of the reasons I left the defense industry is that the people who could say no out numbered the one’s that said yes when it can to getting things done.
The problem is that the entire Pentagon and the military branches are totally disorganized and confused...
Disorganized and confused on everything except DEI, wokeness, and perversion...
On these three important aspects our military is without peer across the entire globe...
The Marines have drones that are 10’s of thousands of dollars each, short battery life and are limited because of default manufacturing software guidance that limits any training due to logistics over tactical training. The drone attempts to go back to the manufacturing plant as a default for power or guidance reboot.
So if a mortar, grenade or explosive is attached….. might have a problem if a drone “goes back home” with ordnance attached.
The same geniuses that couldn’t remove equipment from Afghanistan, continue to fight insurgencies as WW2 battles and think Russia is just a gas station with nukes are planning drone strategy.
The next peer-peer war is going to be like WW1. The tactics will not be adapted to the technology. Machine guns and artillery then. Drones and other stand-off weapons now with irregular insurgent forces and non state enemies.
If Ukraine really wanted to crush Russia, they should let them take the entire country and bleed them over a 10-15 year of continuous guerrilla warfare. It’d be a lot less bloody but the weapons manufacturers wouldn’t make big profits.
A program without funding is not a program.
>> This Regime is no longer capable of doing anything.
They’re pretty good at staging drag queen recruiting campaigns.
I guess I should have said “no longer capable of doing anything real”.
LOL
LOL!
