The lack of understanding in parts of US Congress is breathtaking. A congressman this week suggested Ukraine should name a finite price tag and a specific, simple goal. It’s staggering after two American wars of choice in two decades, costing trillions of dollars, that congressional memories are so short, and comprehension so limited.
the most useful headline for Kyiv should be how unutterably bleak the frontlines are for them now. In nearly every direction, the news is grim. Russian forces are hiving off parts of the eastern city of Avdiivka, yet another town Moscow seems content to throw thousands of lives at despite its minimal importance. Along the Zaporizhzhia frontline, where the counteroffensive was focused but ultimately slow and unrewarding, Russian units have come back with renewed vigor and the defense is costly for Ukraine. Ukraine has made a plucky (or foolhardy) dash across the Dnipro River, with some small progress into Russian lines.
The casualties have been immense, their supply lines are problematic, and their prospects dim.
Zelensky has had a truly abysmal week. His team trumpeted the symbolic victory of EU accession negotiations, and he called it a sign “history is made by those who don’t get tired of fighting for freedom.”
But for actual EU membership the war has to end, and it has to end with Ukraine remaining a viable nation. Neither of these things are currently guaranteed.

The end is near.
We told you so.
Yup! Like everything else, it’s all our fault because we can print money and give it away. It’s like we’re a bunch of counterfeiters.
100%
“one morose Ukrainian medic told me Thursday”— with all due respect to the medic, does this reporter actually believe the medic has a strategic grasp from his fox hole?
I’d be pretty bitter if I was Ukraine too. U.S. and Europe are the ones that told them they could win. They fought this way for the past 1.5 years or so because of that. Lot of death and destruction that could have been avoided had NATO nations been straight with them from the onset.
The Zeepers are getting even more reactionary and angry as their dreams of running the Ukraine for evil, fun and profit dies right in front of them. The sadistic bastards in our establishment are clamoring for NATO mobilization and starting a direct confrontation with Russia. Zeepers and our garbage establishment are twisted and insane.
Excellent!
You noticed too?
I was in the US Army long ago, worked in the US and around the world but kept voting in the US when abroad, and we retired back to the states. In my 70s, I have never voted for a "war of choice."
Today and as Mr. Robinson has said, there is "a difference of opinion whether or not the US government should be involved in a controversial foreign war where we were not attacked." There has been a difference of opinion about "American wars of choice" for over twenty years now, as the public debt had grown from about $5 trillion to about $34 trillion, in part because of "American wars of choice."
What is certain now, first with the NYTimes, then Business Insider and Washington Post, and now with CNN, the "official" news media is diverting the message flow to the "next" narrative. 5 - 4 - 3 - 2 ......
yes, when they knew all along Russia would win.
Our female resident Ukraine Propaganda Minister won’t like this news.
Absolutely, and this ending will be a very dangerous time. They invested years and $billions of US tax dollars into Russian regime change. I don't trust them to fade away quietly.
All our fault so next they’ll want us to pay to rebuild Ukraine.
Well, the plan had been to get everyone else embroiled into the scuffle.
Tried hard too.
Recall Ukraine firing a missile into Poland and claiming Russia did it.
The warmongers were beating the war drum hard and frothing wildly and then oopsies it gets revealed that Ukraine fired it.
We told you so.
Yes, and Nord Stream.
Russia can have the place and deny the Clintons and the Blackrocks their money making schemes.
Let Russia pay to rebuild.
Agreed
Yup.
The official US government propaganda on nordstream never made sense.
