Two men are facing felony charges for conspiracy and unlawful trafficking of bald and golden eagles.
The federal indictment accuses Simon Paul and Travis John Branson of illegally killing approximately 3,600 birds on the Flathead Indian Reservation, including eagles, and knowingly selling them on the black market across the United States.
According to court documents filed Dec. 7, 2023, during the investigation law enforcement uncovered messages from Branson describing the illegal taking of eagles saying, “out here committing felonies,” and telling buyers he was on a “killing spree.”

Ill eagle immigration.
I wonder if I would be allowed to possess an eagle feather as a white honorary member of the Stoney tribe. Probably be pushing my luck.
Undocumented Avians
I remember living in New Mexico in 1959. There was a sheep ranch south of us and they had predators they had killed strung up all along their fence gate. Mostly coyotes.
One day we went there and saw a dead Mountain lion, and several Golden Eagles. We plucked out the feathers to fletch our home made arrows with.
Again, 1959.
When I mentioned this on Facebook several years back one person almost got violent with me over it. I was thrown off that site not long after when some woman wanted to relocate a nest of wasps. I said “You don’t relocate wasps! You kill them!” Wham I was gone.
Decades ago National Geographic told how the Hopis kill hand raised eagles for their feathers. They did a hole, place the tied eagle in and cover it up allowing the eagle to smother. Then they can dig it up with no damage to the feathers.
I understood it had government approval.
I, myself, am a member of the birch tribe. Get it? Birch=white? Actually, I’m about 1/8 Indian, but since I’m not on the dawes list, I’m up a creek, in a birch canoe, without a paddle. Snort!
You’re a wise man
For years, Indians with religious authority had to wait for years to get a single bald eagle feather for rituals. Often it was a loaner only, and was laser engraved with a serial number.
Things have recently turned around because of one woman, the late “Alaskan eagle lady”. She lived on a harbor that had a small number of eagles. She noted that canneries threw away a LOT of fish offal, filling at least a dumpster, so she asked if she could use it to feed eagles in winter, when they were always at risk of starvation. They agreed.
In a few years, the numbers of eagles exploded. Because they are territorial birds, the area soon was exporting eagles into Canada and the rest of the US. Areas that had not seen eagles for many decades started seeing them again.
