WASHINGTON (AP) — White House officials will take more time to review a sweeping plan from U.S. health regulators to ban menthol cigarettes, an unexpected delay that anti-tobacco groups fear could scuttle the long-awaited rule.
Administration officials indicated Wednesday the process will continue into next year, targeting March to implement the rule, according to an updated regulatory agenda posted online. Previously, the rule was widely expected to be published in late 2023 or early January.

Ex smoker here. At one time I smoked True Green 100s or B&H Menthols. Stopped for 2 years. Picked it up again but realized how awful menthol cigarettes are. Switched to non-menthol before quitting for good.
My father started smoking menthols in his late 50s and smoked them until he died at 87... He had previously smoked Rothman’s. Not sure if that’s the key to longevity or not, but they obviously didn’t hurt him.

Yeah, I’m a nonsmoker, but that double-standard irks me too... especially in California. The minority of nicotine users (most of whom seems to hold down jobs and be productive members of society) are demonized while the stoners are celebrated and do as they please. When I’m at a baseball game in San Francisco, for example, it seems like no one would ever dare to light up a tobacco cigar, cigarette or pipe in the bleachers, but the stoners fire up their foul-smelling, brain-rotting doobies with impunity.
