Major California toy retailers without “gender-neutral” sections will be fined hundreds of dollars under Gov. Gavin Newsom’s pro-LGBTQ bill.
Assembly Bill No. 1084, signed by Newsom in 2021, will be enacted on January 1, 2024, and will require stores that sell “childcare items or toys” for children aged 12 years or younger to display a gender-neutral section — or be fined up to $500.
Stores will be required by law to have designated gender-neutral toys “regardless of whether they have been traditionally marketed for either girls or for boys,” the bill states.
The legislation will apply to retailers with 500 or more employees, and those who fail to comply will be “liable for a civil penalty not to exceed $250 for a first violation or $500 for a subsequent violation.”
The bill was originally introduced into the California Assembly by then-Assemblyman Evan Low (D-CA), who is now a representative in the U.S. Congress.
He celebrated Newsom signing the bill in a 2021 statement to the Associated Press, saying “We need to stop stigmatizing what’s acceptable for certain genders and just let kids be kids.”
“My hope is this bill encourages more businesses across California and the U.S. to avoid reinforcing harmful and outdated stereotypes,” Low said, adding that he was “incredibly grateful” for Newsom’s support on the bill.
When the assembly bill was first introduced, Lego released a statement saying that the company was working to make its products more inclusive for girls.

“It’s been a while since I’ve been in a toy store (not that there are many toy stores anymore since Toys R Us and Kaybees went away), but I really don’t remember signs like “Boys Toys” or “Girls Toys.” It seems to be they just had the doll aisle, the games aisle, the stuffed animal aisle, infants toy aisle, etc.
People just figured it out for themselves based on what type of toy they were looking for.”

Excellent point and I agree with you 100%. Is Newsome looking to put toy stores out of business as well? Dear God in Heaven, please take Newsome out of any and all leadership positions. Remove him from the governorship which he does not deserve and I pray You would never allow him to be president of our country. In Jesus’ mighty name I pray!

Gender neutral? Like Legos and board games and books and puzzles? Are girls not allowed to shop in the boys section and vice versa?
I’m sure this will go over well in the Hispanic and Black communities. If they even hear about this insanity. The Repubs will be ‘too nice’ to bring this up.
If Repubs actually wanted to win, they’d bring this up and remind the public at every single opportunity. No sane person can support this evil garbage. Tie this around the Dems neck. But nope, the Repubs won’t do it.

I recall going to a Toys are Us store not too many years ago in CA. Looking for toy for a 9 year old boy. I find they had like 3 isles of human figurines, which are basically dolls..I’m thinking where in &$*# where are the real toys at? When I was a kid we would have takin those dolls and used them as BB gun targets. Or hit them with lighter fluid just to watch them burn...Liven things up. They had no real toys I could find.
I asked this one chubby clerk where the slingshots were, he looks at me like I was a two headed alien from a distant galaxy. In this squeaky sniveling mumble he says, “Did you say sling shots?” Yes. And like Pee Wee Herman he tilts his head, smiles and says, “Oh, we don’t carry weapons”.

Walked out disgusted thinking, how long could you keep a 9 year old boy busy with a plastic doll? In the pack of brats I hung with, they’d last maybe 20 minutes.
Well the legislative branch passes so many laws they are not reported on
So more retailers will be leaving California.
Gender neutral would be like a Gruesome Newsom “action figure.”
It could easily be argued this is bill of attainder.
I hate woke Target, but next month I may make a trip over there just rearrange the toy section. With any luck, Target could end up with a $500 fine.
Does the law define “gender neutral” or do you have to ask the Cal Politburo what it means? So if I have a toy factory and I am the only manufacturer with “gender neutral” dolls I can charge $5000 for each doll and stores which don’t stock them will be fined? Even if their inventory of dolls is completely stocked? Another reason I’m glad I don’t live there.

The solution for the businesses is simple. They can put up some signs that say ...
“All of our toys are “gender neutral.” We don’t care who buys them or who plays with them.”
They might also put this on the sign ...
“Gavin Newsom wasted $3 million tax dollars requiring us to put up this $10 dollar sign. Both of those cost increases on our toys is on him.”
