Something is rotten in the imperial court of Chairman Xi Jinping.
While the world is distracted by war in the Middle East and Ukraine, a Stalin-like purge is sweeping through China’s ultra-secretive political system, with profound implications for the global economy and even the prospects for peace in the region.
The signals emanating from Beijing are unmistakable, even as China’s security services have ramped up repression to totalitarian levels, making it almost impossible to know what is really happening inside the country.
The unexplained disappearance and removal of China’s foreign and defense ministers — both Xi loyalists who were handpicked and elevated mere months before they went missing earlier this year — are just two examples.

“The signals emanating from Beijing are unmistakable, even as China’s security services have ramped up repression to totalitarian levels, making it almost impossible to know what is really happening inside the country.”
WOW! Sounds almost as bad as here!
Bkmk
The same thing is happening in Russia, with Putin purging disloyal people. Putin though plays into the West’s hopes that he is about to fall to hide this (and his military buildup, which is directed at us, not so much Ukraine.) China is also building up their forces.
"Deposition excerpts filed by the Jan 6. select committee — part of an effort to force former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows to appear for an interview — suggest that some of Trump’s top allies in Congress were frequently present in meetings where a handful of strategies to prevent then-President-elect Joe Biden from taking office were discussed, including efforts to replace the leadership of the Justice Department with figures who would sow doubts about the legitimacy of the election.
Lawmakers who attended meetings, in person or by phone, included Reps. Scott Perry (R-Pa.), Louie Gohmert (R-Texas), Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) and numerous members of the House Freedom Caucus, according to Cassidy Hutchinson, an aide to Meadows who provided key testimony about the conversations and meetings Meadows had in December 2020."
Cassidy Hutchinson....that name sounds familiar. Oh yes, the J6 committee star witness who has now filed a novel of 'errata' to her testimony, essentially ex post facto altering it. Its a shame the J6 committee 'inadvertently' destroyed evidence to cross check....
Xi has destroyed the “accommodation” system post Mao and Deng, where different factions of the party shared power, as long as they all publicly represented and protected the Party. I believe inside the Party, he is hated for that.
Publicly though - because of this fear, Xi has rooted out glaring institutional corruption. No Party official now dares to buy cut-rate apartments in their mistress’ name, take bribes, or mix their public position with big business.
He has also directing far more resources into agriculture and rural development, etc...
A lot of people in China support him for these things. So as always, there’s a lot of nuance.
“But if you go carrying pictures of Chairman Mao
You ain’t going to make it with anyone anyhow....”
Well, maybe not!
Brandon and the ‘swamp’ will watch China laugh and yell out: ‘Hold my beer!!’
Brandon and the ‘swamp’ will watch China laugh and yell out: ‘Hold my beer!!’
I think they have to do this every 20-30 years
Yeah!!
Substitute "Washington, DC" "United States" and Biden" for "Beijing," "China" and "Xi" and the report is just as valid.
In China, corruption is a way of life. The question is how long can you get away with it. China’s leaders are always shocked to find gambling in this casino.
How dare GOP lawmakers do their Constitutional duty and question an obviously stolen election!/sarc
Now you can see why he came here to talk and explain what he was going to do.
It’s always that way.
Agree that Xi is a clever politician who is not afraid to wield his power. Believe he has one fatal flaw. Suspect he desires more than anything to go down in history as a most consequential Chinese leader. That means that he is sorely tempted to reunify Taiwan with China during his tenure. However he knows that if he decides to order an invasion across 90 miles of open ocean with his army of combat inexperienced “one child” soldiers and locally produced untested armaments and if the people of Taiwan stoutly resist (questionable), he knows that it could be a devastating failure. Then he, his family and his cabal would face dire consequences. Yet he is sorely tempted.
Yes. Indeed. Its probably what every CCP leader, even Mao, considered. The quest for glory in Taiwan vs. the risk of unintended, dangerous consequences.
I believe the CCP generally think the "status quo" favors them. Taiwan is economically tied to China. Cultural ties are stronger than ever. I've seen figures that as much as 15% of Taiwan's population actually live in China for work, family, study, etc...A lot of mainland tourists visit Taiwan. Smart young Taiwanese are almost forced to go to China to develop their careers and look for "bigger jobs." The KMT on Taiwan is Pro-China, even if not "pro-CCP"
Taiwan is not a military threat to them and unless someone ramps-up the "pro-independence" movement, the realists in the CCP feel they can wait it out, IMHO
Interesting.
Xi probably wishes he could emulate Kim’s method of having underlings no longer wanted sit out in a field and catch a mortar shell.
Taiwan has missiles capable of reaching Beijing. They also have the Hsiung Feng anti-ship missile system.
Taiwan might be more difficult to invade than believed.
Many developed nations, including China, worry about the aging of their nation and low birth rates (which China's government is very much responsible for) and that may slow down many developed nations from starting large wars among each other (they need their young men to breed and raise the next generation instead of being killed off in a major war against a major power). China, however, has some men that can't be used for breeding because of the shortage of women, thus they have may have the most expendable young men of all powerful nations.
