Angus needs to read the Kansas Constitution where it pertains to might right to own firearms:

§ 4. Individual right to bear arms; armies.
A person has the right to keep and bear arms for
the defense of self, family, home and state, for
lawful hunting and recreational use, and for any
other lawful purpose; but standing armies, in time
of peace, are dangerous to liberty, and shall not be
tolerated, and the military shall be in strict subordination to the civil power.

As a side note we out here in the great free state of Kansas call ‘angus’ a breed of cattle.

"Just get an M1 Garand or M14. They’re battlefield rifles, not “assault rifles.” The M1 doesn't have a magazine, so it wouldn't qualify as an assault rifle.

The ATF will now claim a bolt action rifle is gas operated if you fart while you work the action, or if the person who shoots it is breathing.

These are particularly dangerous, useful only for killing people, and we want to diminish that lethality.

I thought they were necessary to the security of a free state.

I’ve kept her around for 37 years. Too late to send her back.

She epitomizes that Bible verse.

After all, if these are weapons of war, good only for killing people, and don't belong in our country, then they don't belong in the government's arsenal, except for use on foreign territory.

Your logic is correct, but you forgot that disarmament must be complete. The government and all of their agents must first either hand over to the citizens or destroy every weapon that might be used against citizens. That would include artillery, mortars, rockets, and any other explosive device.

Or they could allow the citizens to legally obtain any of those items.

Angus King's idea is just plain dumb, and an affront to the 2nd Amendment. In light of what just happened in Israel there is more need than ever for citizens to be armed, and capable of fighting off large numbers of terrorists.

On October 7th in Israel many lives were saved by armed citizens. Many of those civilians would have been able to save more lives, including in some cases those of themselves and their children, if they had more ammunition to use against the terrorists.

In today's world citizens need more powerful weapons, and the ability to fight off mobs of terrorists.

But, unlike criminals, you only need to fear my automatic weapon or my sawed-off shotgun if you invade my home or attack it. You only need to fear my handgun if you attack me on the streets or in an office, church, school or store. If you don’t come after me, you’re perfectly safe from MY weapons.

I was thinking similarly. It might be worth a discussion so long as domestic government agencies, including local law enforcement, would agree to the same.

Good luck.

I think his personal security detail should only be armed with one-shot musket pistols, myself.

Did Angus dunk his head in a bucket of stupid before he said that? I’m pretty sure he did.

First of all, Congress didn’t ban machine guns and sawed-off shotguns 100 ago, closer to 90. What they did was ban the possession of them without having a $200 tax stamp. They were still operating under the quaint notion that Congress couldn’t ‘ban’ things nationally, but they could tax them out of existence.

The Constitutional challenge to the law ban on sawed-off shotguns was affirmed by SCOTUS after the plaintiff had died, on the grounds that sawed-off shotguns weren’t weapons of war and therefor of no use to a militia.

I think they’re working at it from the other direction.... They would have us believe that on J6, unarmed Americans nearly toppled the US government.

Yes. The Remington 788 comes to mind. Remington’s 760 is a pump-action magazine-fed rifle. Pretty sure you can still find “high-capacity” magazines for it.
