Passenger Jumps From 737 At New Orleans

A passenger suffering an apparent “mental health emergency” popped an overwing emergency exit on a Southwest plane in New Orleans and jumped to the ramp Sunday evening. Airport police were called to the gate after ground personnel detained the passenger. No one was hurt but the passenger was described as being “incoherent.”

“When deputies made contact with the man, they found he was incoherent and not fully aware of his surroundings,” a news release from the police said. He was still in the hospital on Monday for evaluation. Southwest said everyone did everything right in the incident. “We commend our flight and ground crews for their swift action and apologize to our Customers for their inconvenience,” Southwest Airlines said in an email to USA TODAY. The plane was ready to push so passengers had to be put on another aircraft for their flight to Atlanta and Baltimore.

Family members just had a Southwest flight that had to turn back to gate, due to a passenger having a ‘mental issue’.

Luckily, the mental case was allowed off, before anything more crazy happened. The flight continued on, after about an hour delay.

Then, I read another article about someone on meth having to be detained, on a recent flight.

What is with all of the crazies flying on commercial flights, these days?

Commercial air transport is the modern equivalent of a bus.

Between medication and booze (at the airport bars)...I think the majority are reacting to the mix. Probably would be better off to ban booze sales in airports.

One brewing episode I see...if the numbers keep escalating and people get on no-fly lists...you might eventually see in ten years....10-percent of the nation unable to fly anywhere.

It’s almost as if the gov’t is somehow subsidizing these flights....for some.

I doubt this had little to do with booze.

I would rather see a dress code for passengers. It may instill a mild sense of civility in some.

I am old enough to remember when you wore your best when traveling by air. Then the government deregulated airlines and it became a fight to the bottom as they (the airlines) fixated on fares to see who could provide the lowest cost (and ending all the nice things about flying, such as large comfy seats with leg room, meals at the appropriate times, and stewardess that were not bad to look at).

They lowered the price and then tried to cram as many bodies as possible and if they provided anything it was extra.

With lower fares those that would normally travel by Greyhound began to fly ...

Which is when I quit flying. If I can not get there by car (or boat) I am not going.

“...suffering an apparent “mental health emergency”

This sounds so much nicer than “crazy person”.

I have watched a few of Smithsonian’s “AIR DISASTERS”, and came to the conclusion I will never fly again. Watching those passengers scream all the way down is a little unsettling.

Back in the early 60’s, two of my aunts took a trip to Puerto Rico flying out of Idlewild Airport. I can still remember how they were dressed. They both wore suits with hats and high heels. Our whole family turned out to see them off.
How times have changed.

The sole reason for commercial flights is to make a profit.

Probably an LSU fan sad that football season is over with LSU behind both Bama and Ole Miss (tiebreaker rule) in the SEC West.

I have no problem with that.

I was just saying why I quit flying. The airlines can do whatever they want and I can decide not to use their service.

See we have no disagreement.

You took my thought personally.

The change in service that resulted from deregulation resulted from the need to make a profit
