Democrats change primary election date making Michigan Republican primary votes completely meaningless
Lapeer County Tribune (Michigan) ^ | 11/22/2023 | Scott McMahan

Posted on 11/24/2023 4:13:27 PM PST by DFG

Now that state legislators have adjourned two months early for the year, the Michigan primary election will be held on February 27, 2024, putting the Republican primary in violation of Republican National Convention (RNC) rules so that Michigan delegates will no longer be counted towards the winner of the Republican National Convention.

To stem a competition between states to move the primaries earlier and earlier, the RNC established a longstanding rule that only New Hampshire, Iowa, Nevada, and South Carolina can hold their primaries prior to March 1, as those states have done so for decades. The penalty set by the RNC is the stripping of up to 90% of the state's delegates.

“The primary this year will be nothing more than a beauty contest,” said former State Representative and current Lapeer County Commissioner Gary Howell (R) in a statement to the Tribune. Howell went on to say, “Our vote will not be counted by the RNC. It will be of no legal consequence whatsoever.”

The moving of the Michigan primary election from the second Tuesday of March to the last Tuesday of February was a move that was spearheaded by Governor Gretchen Whitmer and passed along strictly partisan lines, with every Democrat in the house and Senate voting for the move and every Republican opposing it. State law determines that any bill that passes without a two-thirds supermajority requires a 90-day window without a challenge in congress before it can be signed into law by the Governor.

Thank you for referencing that article DFG.

"The penalty set by the RNC is the stripping of up to 90% of the state's delegates."

FR: Never Accept the Premise of Your Opponent’s Argument

If I understand this situation correctly, given that the RNC isn't mentioned in the Constitution, this situation is election interference imo.

In fact, given the zero tolerance "hair triggers" of Section 2 of the 14th Amendment, that section a penalty for states where ballot box fraud has occurred, the Trump-hating RNC needs to either support the voters or face the consequences imo.

"But when the right to vote at any election [...] is in any way abridged"

This seems like the very definition of ELECTION INTERFERENCE.

Rule 17(A)

Republicans are nonexistent in Michigan. And when they dare to rise up, the trifecta of winches make sure they are disqualified....

The Dems change their “rules” as it suits - why can’t the Repubs modify their rules to counter this shit?

The RNC should keep this in mind as they make their rules.

PARTY rules have nothing to do with actual LAWS or government enforced REGULATIONS.

Have a quick meet in a honky-tonk bar over a couple beers, vote “aye” on changing the dates... done and done.

Ya, it really is that easy.

Since this was done by the opposition party (democrats) with no republicans voting with them, can this not be nullified by the RNC by allowing the delegates to vote n the convention and allowing their vote to count?

Can be restored at the Convention in Milwaukee (why are we going to Milwaukee?) with a voice vote. Would be a nice first-night spotlight to have President Trump do it.

No state party has a right to compel its state to hold a primary election for Presidential delegates, nor can be compelled by a state to choose its Presidential delegates by primary.

Michigan GOP will simply have to schedule caucuses at a time compliant with RNC rules.

(Interestingly, in most states, the state CAN compel a party to choose its candidates for other offices by primary, or simply do away with the party choosing its candidates in any meaningful sense in favor of open primaries, jungle primaries and single transferable vote regimes.)

The article explains it. If the RNC changes the rules for Michigan, they have to change them for everyone.

Maybe, they could just change them for Michigan and explain why, but that allows everyone else to special pleading too.

Which they should change completely. After every Pres election, every State is given a "Republican-ness" rating based on percentage of counties voting for the Repub President, as well as how Repub vs Dem their Reps, Senators, and Gov are. The five most Republican States hold their primaries in the first week of March. Then every week, the next five hold theirs. And so on.

I don't know why we have so many red States starting off the process. Ignoring potential fraud, NH hasn't voted for a Repub Pres sine 2000, their House and Senate is pretty solid Commie. Iowa's been back-and forth but has gone more blue lately. Nevada leans to the reds. SC is the only one of those four that is solidly Repub. But why not start with Idaho, Wyoming, West Virginia, Oklahoma, and North Dakota? Let actual Republican States pick the candidate, not a bunch of Red/reddish States.

Iowa has gone more blue? I don’t think so…

Small states first gave lesser known candidates a chance to gradually build attention and support, but are likely irrelevant in the Social Media Age.

Since 1990, Iowa has gone:
Pres: DDDRDDRR
Gov: RRDDDRRRR
Senate: DR DR DR DR RR RR
House: 90-04: 33R/8D | 06-18: 16D/15R | 20-22: 7R/1D
2000-2012, Iowa was leaning red, then evened out some, but since 2020, out of the 12 contests, only one Dem has been elected (House seat in 2020, and flipped Repub in 2022). Iowa is now 100% blue in these top spots.

Somewhat, there's a lot fewer people to convince to get an electoral vote or two in a small State, but that's really irrelevant. As a party, why do I really care about small independents / minor party members? I would want the candidates that best represent my party, and it makes sense for the States that are most heavily associated with my party to be the ones that can best make that decision.

And out of curiosity, looked it up: of the first five States I mentioned, WY and ND are #1 and #4 for least population. The biggest on my list, OK, is the 23rd smallest.
