Then-Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump railed against “so-called Christians” and “pieces of s—” evangelicals who supported Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) in the 2016 Iowa caucuses, according to a forthcoming book.
At the time, allies of Cruz had been making hay of Trump’s flub before an audience at Virginia’s Liberty University, a conservative evangelical college, in which he botched a question about his favorite Bible verse and replied that it came from the book of “Two Corinthians,” rather than “Second Corinthians.”
“The laughter and ridicule were embarrassing enough for Trump,” Tim Alberta writes in his new book, “The Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory: American Evangelicals in an Age of Extremism,” an excerpt of which was reported by the Guardian.
“But the news of [Family Research Council President Tony] Perkins endorsing Ted Cruz, just a few days later, sent him into a spiral. He began to speculate that there was a conspiracy among powerful evangelicals to deny him the GOP nomination,” Alberta adds. “When Cruz’s allies began using the ‘Two Corinthians’ line to attack him in the final days before the Iowa caucuses, Trump told one Iowa Republican official, ‘You know, these so-called Christians hanging around with Ted are some real pieces of s—.'” ***
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, 45, who polls show is in a distant second place to the thrice-married real estate billionaire and former reality TV star, on Tuesday won the endorsement of “Iowa Caucus kingmaker” Bob Vander Plaats, a prominent Christian evangelical leader in the Hawkeye State.
“What we saw in 2022, the supposedly ‘red wave’ really only happened in Florida and in Iowa,” Vander Plaats told Fox News “Special Report” host Bret Baier.

He wasn’t talking about all of them, just the ones that hung out with Cruz.
The attempts to put a wedge between Trump and Pro-Lifers/Evangelicals/TradCatholics is way too clunky.
I WAS one of those Cruz supporters. Trump delivered as much as he could, and exposed that our whole edifise is completely infested with termites. DeSantis could have earned a spot as a back-up/2028 nominee, but he picked the wrong allies and is the wrong guy for the national level right now. He might have been okay in 1988, 2000 or 2008, not now, not in the future.
Trump delivers and he has the right enemies. I also like tat he isn’t interested in starting wars. I am hopeful he won’t be suckered by the next scamdemic. But to whom shall we turn? DeSantis, Haley, Asa Hutchinson?!
NY Post is a tabloid and tabloids sensationalize.
tim alberta....
writes for the atlantic, was at politico
son of evangelical minister
desided to write a book on all the bad things about christianity and churches in america
media is taking one comment out of the book, which may or may not have happened, to promote the book for alberta
I think what would be a more honest portrayal of this issue would be Trump upset with major Christian evangelical supporters of Ted Cruz, than Trump being upset with “Christian evangelicals”.
It so wrong so often when things are generalized just make the headline, blurb, ect. shorter. The error is how totally wrong impressions are formed all the time.
typo in decided...
Did they though?
The NY Post might have had to report that the dossier existed, but I don’t remember that they were pushing the story.
When DeSantis is out of the picture, will Trump be supporting DeSantis yet again, like Trump now supports “Wonderful” Ted Cruz?
It could happen if Trump gets the notion it is in Trump's best interest to promote DeSantis again.
How many times has Trump gone back and forth in his regard for Niki bird brain?
Me, too! I give up on Trump. He hates all Christians, right? The media always tells us the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, right?
also looks like an anti/nevertrumper
wrote for the national review
came out with a book on how Trump and others on the right caused a civil war when they tried to change the gop called american carnage
Speaking as a Pentecostal...so do I.
Hogwash!
I was going on what the other person said.
Might want to ask them?
The fake news media never stops. Trump or no one.
Is this a serious question or more just stoking the flames? Your query is akin to a Democrat attacking its own for not falling in line. Most Desantis supporters would vote for either. Few and I mean a very few I’ve ever seen that wouldn’t vote for our former President. The majority of posts I see pertaining to this subject continuously snipe to bring a rise out of people who may hold a differing candidate going into the primaries and primaries only. The “TDS” the name calling, the labeling, etc is what lefties do and completely childish. Know a fantastic way to keep people home from the polls? Keep up with the line of attacks comrade. Nothing does it better than wedging and segregating blocks of people like the lefties do.
It appears those so called Christians would rather not vote for the ‘evil’ Trump and let our country go to hell. They are completely brainwashed by MSM and anti-Trump pundits...
and pious about it as well.
Me Too!!!!!!......ribbit
According to the quote, if true (major If), President Trump was referring to the Evangelicals hanging around Cruz.
In essence, so what? That wouldn’t be a characterization of all evangelicals, just a very specific and tiny group directly attached to Cruz.
Again, so what? The left trying to throw yet more crap against the wall to see if anything will stick.
Well, Glen Beck says that by being a Mormon he is a Christian.
One more reason to stay away from the GB drama queen disaster.
I remember listening to Beck's radio show way back when. He was literally crying that he almost died as a result of a hemorrhoidectomy. He claimed that the pain was unbearable. I nearly drove off the road laughing. Comedy gold!
