“Minor quibble, and I don’t know for certain, but I suspect the 18650s in a battery pack are welded and not soldered.”

Welded, per Tesla.

If you get an answer let me know. I know people I could ask but things change so much in the industry its hard to keep up with it and many of them hold stuff close to the vest for a competitive edge.

I corrected that above - fact is the connections are made to do the job and save weight so machine welded they are better than soldering (like many e-bikes - one reason they have so many problems) but are still vulnerable to mechanical damage.

A friend was telling me about this amazing stuff they have discovered underground, he called it hydrocarbon .
It’s black and liquid.
He thinks they can maybe distill it and make liquid fuel out of it. Fuel that could be stored and shipped and power cars.
Sounds like an amazing thing.
Way better than these expensive and toxic batteries.

“but are still vulnerable to mechanical damage.”

Instead of modules in a container, Tesla is building a honey comb unit. One large container built into the car’s structural integrity.

He did a video on Hyundai Elantra Hybrid
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5pTp1PRJJY

I looked up the battery replacement and it is $2,000 to $8,000. This is for a far smaller battery then full electric.

Stay with gas powered only!!

thx. those prices are what i’ve seen as well. and agreed, stay with IC as long as you can.

that being said, i did inherit a toyota camry hybrid, though, and it has been reliable so far. about 110K and i haven’t had to work on the battery yet.

Most people within the industry agree with me that a more stable battery would be very beneficial.

LFP batteries are more stable than the LI(NMC) batteries. LFP batteries have less energy density and weigh more. That is why Tesla is only going to put them in the standard range models.

The Tesla Plaid pack uses 7,920 18650 cells arranged in 5 modules that have a 72P22S arrangement each (total of 72P110S). Same BMS system as Model 3/Y. It is capable of sustained 2300A output at a max voltage of 462V (That’s over 1 megawatt).

22 cells in series gives about 80 v. charging voltage is 4.2.

4.2v x 22S x 5 modules = 462v.

If they are using best practices all cells are interconnected.

For a module you would have a 22 in series and every cell in the string would be connected in parallel with 71 other cells.

From a photo I saw it looked like there was a bus bar going across the 72P and the cells were connected to the busbars by what Tesla calls cold bonding.

I see some info on a Tesla 96 cell module. Each cell has voltage but only 32 have Temps. Looks like a 6S16P configuration.

Here is a screenshot of a 6S16P module. A poster said T1 and T2 were cells but I am thinking coolant Temps.

“That is why Tesla is only going to put them in the standard range models.”

And commercial storage systems where space and weight are lesser concerns.

Scotty LOVES the Elantra Hybrid!

Batteries should last more than 200k mile. Savings in oil changes alone pays for another battery.

New: $1890
Reconditioned: $890

Rumor has it Tesla’s PW3 will be LFP when sales start next year. This seems likely since PW2 and PW3 can’t be mixed according to their FAQ..

Right. Which gives the insurance industry a giant reason to push EVs, because along with your car payment, you are going to being paying a separate insurance about equal the amount to repair your car. Warranties.
