The Israel Defense Forces says the hijacking of a shipping vessel in the Red Sea by the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen is a βvery serious incident on the global scale.β
It says the ship was sailing from Turkey to India with an international civilian crew, without any Israelis aboard.
βThis is not an Israeli ship,β the IDF adds.
The military directly blames the Houthis for the hijacking.
There are no Israelis among the crew aboard the Galaxy Leader ship. Arabic-language media outlets say there are 52 crew members aboard the vessel.
The Bahaman-flagged vessel is registered under a British company, which is partially owned by Israeli tycoon Abraham Ungar, who goes by Rami. The vessel was leased out to a Japanese company at the time of the hijacking.
The Iran-backed Houthis have vowed to target Israeli-linked vessels in the Red Sea.

Houthis assumed that since it was in the Red Sea, it must have been Israeli
Houthis need to get the Hamas treatment
Captain Merrill Stubing got the Purser and the bartender Isaac to trick the hijackers and get the Houthis in handcuffs and held in his cabin. With some stern words to them.
The crisis was over and the passengers and crew danced under the moonlight and ate a festive meal.π³οΈππΎπ·πΈπΉ

At first glance, these Houthis don’t seem the brightest bunch of terrorists.
Piracy was the first real international issue the fledgling U.S Republic. And now Biden has energised these kind of things by giving money to Iran. God knows what the ckown has offered the hamas by way of their Iranian masters. The Houthis want some of the pie now. No ship wil be safe in areas adjacent to musloid nutjobs now.
Love me some Love Boat reruns./s
And there's the rub.
Flag could be from any country, Liberia, Cyprus, Isle of Man, it means nothing. Captain could be from Russia, Ukraine, Greece, etc. Crew, probably majority Philippino. Ownership, probably a consortium that may or may not have Israelis included.
This is a car-ship, which is quite valuable, assuming it's fully loaded, easy to off-load, many willing buyers.
Port of Aden has a RO-RO pier (Roll on roll off), and in a jiffy these vehicles will be all throughout the Saudi Peninsula and the arab world.
Houthis probably intercepted boat of Military Age Ukraine men fleeing conscription
in Ukraine Military.
Totally worthless to Houthis.
Ha!
That heard Biden will pay for anyone.
A spokesperson for Japanβs Nippon Yusen 9101.T, also known as NYK, confirmed that a car carrier it operates had been seized in the Red Sea, and that it was gathering further information.
Japanβs Nikkei newspaper reported there were 22 crew on board including Bulgarians and Filipinos but no Japanese nationals.
Tks
Peter Zeihan has been claiming that the US has been backing away from globalization for decades - withdrawing from proving the naval protection of global shipping that it has been proving the world since 1945, and is essential to the maintenance of global supply chains.
This may be an example. If Iran had grabbed merchant ships in the 1980s, what would the USN have done?
“Proving”? You mean “providing”? (Overactive spell check?)
You make a good point though. Without protection of shipping, commerce will fall apart. Exactly what the disruptors want. China’s support of Iran is playing with fire (for China too).
Yes, “providing”.
Zeihan’s thesis is that US commitment to globalization has been declining for decades, under every administration. The supply chain issues caused by the COVID epidemic has accelerated it. Clearly demonstrating its fragility.
Many businesses are finding new suppliers closer to home.
We’re moving to a world more like the 19th century, where countries can depend upon trade only where it can protect its shipping itself.
The US will manage fairly well. We’re a net food and energy exporter. China is uniquely vulnerable.
The Biden administration reclassified the group in February 2021, saying it would help βensure that relevant U.S. policies do not impede assistance to those already suffering what has been called the worldβs worst humanitarian crisis.β
So much for a carrot and stick approach.
Looks like DS only believes in the carrot.
