I concur that Mike Johnson is an improvement over McCarthy. That being said, Matt Gaetz has demonstrated that it’s quite easy to be a bomb thrower. It’s an entirely different thing to throw yourself into the hard work of legislating and winning over support for your positions.
Gaetz booted McCarthy, but had no backup plan on what to do next. Creating this ongoing clown show could very well cost the GOP the House majority in 2024. Gaetz would probably be more comfortable as a member of the minority, as he could fire his verbal missiles in front of the tiny C-Span audience, all the while being powerless to bring about any meaningful changes.
For all the new Matt Gaetz fan club members on FR, please recall that when it was time to get behind a candidate in the 2016 GOP primaries, Gaetz enthusiastically endorsed that staunch conservative - Jeb Bush!
Bottom line - Gaetz remains under an Ethics investigation in the House, and was miffed that McCarthy refused to intervene and set it aside. Not my kind of leader.
Gaetz got McCarthy out and Johnson in.

What backup plan did Gaetz need ?
He, rightly and justifiably, outed McCarthy and his crew as being worthless and liars.
Was that not enough for you. Or would you rather the RINO/UNIPARTY status quo to have continued while we all get screwed?
McCarthy said he’d release all the video. Did he? No.
Johnson has, as far as we all know. So, in essence, Gaetz’s move did produce something.
And yet, somehow, despite not having a plan, that he splashed all over the media, he managed to get perhaps the last honest man in the House into the Speakership.
You sound like the guy who whines that the other team was just "lucky". It is funny but luck seems to always turn up on the side of the guy who buckles down and does his job. Strange the way that works.
The "hard work of legislating and winning over support for your positions" is code for taking contributions from lobbyists so they can purchase legislation to enrich their clients and screw over the American people.
We'd be much better off declaring a ten-year moratorium on "legislation."
