That isn’t a bad idea but, since this is mandated by California, I have no confidence that it will be taught the right way. Well, that isn’t exactly fair. I have no confidence about this being taught by pretty much any public schools anywhere.

I have seen instances where a school taught “Critical Thinking Skills”. Now, you might feel you know what this is. You might feel prepared to give a short description of what any reasonable person might mean by the phrase “Critical Thinking Skills”.

But I can assure you that when the schools teach “Critical Thinking Skills”, what THEY mean is: “Karl Marx was right about everything. Shut up. Stop thinking. Don’t ask questions. Get it through your head: Marx was right about everything. That’s what Critical Thinking means.”

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

Fake news like Trump’s collusion with Russia, that Hunter’s laptop was Russian disinformation, that the the southern border is secure, that shootings are the #1 cause of death in children, that the 2020 election was the most secure in history? That kind of fake news?

From the article:

“Teachers don’t need a state law to show students how to be smart media consumers, and some have been doing it for years. Merek Chang, a high school science teacher at Hacienda La Puente Unified in the City of Industry east of Los Angeles, said the pandemic was a wake-up call for him.

During remote learning, he gave students two articles on the origins of the coronavirus. One was an opinion piece from the New York Post, a tabloid, and the other was from a scientific journal. He asked students which they thought was accurate. More than 90% chose the Post piece.”

So the kids rejected the China Journal of Science claiming that COVID came from bats eaten in a Chinese wet market. Damn kids are smarter than I gave them credit for

In the mid 70’s Propaganda Analysis was one of the required courses for graduation from Iowa State University.

They were trying to get us to not trust the establishment.

But it was a good course, taught me not to trust them.

For anyone with half a brain, today's news articles feel like propaganda, in that they are often poorly-written, poorly spelled pieces which feel like they would blow over in the slightest breeze. When one is listening to someone speaking for example, one can usually gauge within a minute whether the speaker knows what he is talking about, or at least projects an aura of knowing what he is talking about. Today's articles have the feel of being written by people who have no idea what they are talking about and are only certain of one thing: what they want you to believe. And their overriding attitude is "We are the official news authority so you have to believe everything we say, so why even make an effort?"

At least opinion pieces don't hide what they are, and as such, come across as less snake oil.

...thinking critically about what they encounter on the internet.

How about thinking critically what they encounter in schools?

It would be much more educational to be able to distinguish FACT from OPINION. I taught a Logic class in High School, (a private school, of course). and students were able to learn to identify factual statements. Whether that carried over to real life, I’ll never know.

Students also need a clear definition of what constitutes a “LIE.”

If I thought this course would be completely objective, I would consider it worthwhile. But it is nearly impossible for anyone to be completely objective. Or to admit that they were wrong.

I had the same course, but don’t remember it being mandatory. I think it fell into the electives, where you had to choose so many of each type. I think it was in the Speech Department. So I took it since it counted as a Speech elective but I didn’t have to stand up in front of people and speak, which was the real reason.

But, yes, it was VERY well taught and I learned about loaded headlines, etc. and had my eyes opened as a result.
