Fueling electric vehicles costs roughly $17 per gallon: Study
The Washington Examiner via MSN ^ | 11/12/2023 | Bradley Knox

A new study found that fueling electric vehicles costs roughly $17 per gallon.

In its paper "Overcharged Expectations: Unmasking the True Costs of Electric Vehicles," the Texas Public Policy Foundation stipulated that the hidden costs of fueling EVs drastically outweigh its low upfront fueling costs. The hidden costs come from an increased burden on the energy grid exerted by charging stations, and an enormous amount of federal subsidies.

...

"Federal policy is also pushing EVs over hybrid vehicles, even though hybrids offer a far more efficient way to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions," it reads. "They use a much smaller battery, offer excellent driving range and performance, and don’t require any upgrades to our electric infrastructure. Toyota estimated that 90 hybrid batteries can be made from the same amount of raw materials as one EV battery and that those hybrids will reduce emissions 37 times more over their lifetime than one EV (McParland, 2023). However, hybrids receive far fewer subsidies and regulatory favors than EVs, as the prevailing political consensus is 'all EV or nothing.'"

Since you conveniently left out the capital depreciation costs per mile I’d say you need educate yourself as to the real cost per mile of vehicle ownership

Ok, since you say I am misleading, please present your figures.
I presented mine.

What does a solar roof have to do with what I pay? I don’t have a solar roof.

I am an engineer. I know how to make power/cost calculations, it’s part of my job.

It costs me less than 8$ to “fill” up my “tank” with electrons from my provider in Texas. it’s call OctopusEnergy.

In texas we have the right to choose our provider — you can find out rates at https://powertochoose.org

My rate is $ 0.09 cents per KWH. I pay the bill I know.

You might pay somewhere between 10 cents and 17 cents a KWH in texas, depending on which plan you choose. I chose wisely. 3 year locked in rate at 9 cents a KWH.

Even if i paid the highest rate (over 17 cents a KWH), to refill the long range model 3 (which gets 333 miles) would be < 14 dollars at my house.

What the hell does a solar roof have to do with anything?

Capital depreciation applies to ALL VEHICLES regardless of gas/electric. DUH

Since my Mustang GT 5.0 California Special is roughy the same price as the model 3, the capital depreciation costs are similar.

if you drive 100,000 miles, on the Model 3 I will pay 2,198$ in “fuel”, or about 1/20th the cost of the Model 3.
If i drive my Mustang GT, 100K miles, it will cost me 14,9845$ in fuel, or about roughly 1/3 the cost of the Mustang.

Math is brutal. Feelings are Feelings.

My theory is some big Dem cronies know that EV’s are junk, and they’re stuffing their pockets.

Well you have two of the components now add in tax, insurance, and maintenance and that will go a long way to making the comparison fair and subtract out the residual value when you plan to get rid of them will go even further. Oh and add in the cost of the charger too

Uh, Tax, insurance, maintenance occur for both vehicles.

Tax is the same
Insurance is higher on electric but maintenance is higher on gas.

Even though I mostly think hybrids are lame, they are far superior to EV’s.

Losing? Are we in a contest? I thought we were discussing cost per mile. I always surprisingly found that the fuel component was the least of it. My last car that I got rid of cost $55k more than I sold it for and had 50,000 miles on it. For a depreciation cost of $1.10 a mile. It averaged about 18 mpg so over the life of it call gas $2.50/gal which worked out to about 14 cents a mile. Point being the fuel component of the operating cost is one of least important parts. I sold it with about $8500 in repairs needed, but I learned to expect a lot more things break on a car you take to the track.

EV anything is a joke.

Look at the recent EV bus accident in SF. Or the fact that NYC scrapped their EV snowplows. Then there is the spontaneous combustion of EV’s.

Volkswagen had a hyper efficient diesel that was around 100km (61.5mi) per liter (.264gal) or about 240mpg.

There is also record holding Volkswagen diesels that get 70+ mpg.

https://www.wired.com/2010/10/diesel-vw-goes-1531-miles-on-one-tank/

https://www.autoweek.com/news/a1924681/volkswagen-passat-tdi-clean-diesel-sets-fuel-economy-record/

And the carbon footprint, as well as the environmental impact is much smaller for diesels as compared to EV’s.

Yes, that BB fella is comparing apples to oranges, while conviently ignoring the cost of his Level 2 charger and not acknowledgeing that many people pay more for home electricity than does he and that many, if not most, don’t have a garage or even a free-standing home. Those folks will have to pay expensive commercial charging prices or charge at work at whatever those rates are. And he did not consider the worth of a person’s time for a lengthy charge vs a quick fill-up.

You guys don’t know what you are talking about. If you don’t like electric cars, don’t buy them. But don’t make up stuff.

The post was about cost per mile.

Not solar roofs, or depreciation of capital assets.

State you case with math. Nobody on the side of “it costs 17$ a mile” has shared their math.

I showed it cost me 2.2 cents a mile, and my gas car costs me 17 cents a mile.

With math.
