Michigan politicians submit more bills hamstringing property owners

“My background is partially in extremism,” Rep. Emily Dievendorf, D-Lansing, told WKAR News recently while defending legislative proposals supported by a group of progressive lawmakers. Dievendorf is the author and key sponsor of a series of housing bills and ideas that would upend the rental market in Michigan.

This includes rent control and preventing landlords from using criminal background checks for renters. More bills were introduced recently, including:

HB 5235 – Requires housing providers to accept renters on a “first come, first serve” basis (unless legally obligated not to, as in cases of low-income housing).

HB 5237 – The state must provide taxpayer-funded legal services for those filing lawsuits against landlords. Everyone would have access to “brief legal assistance” and anyone under 200% of the poverty line would receive full legal representation in civil litigation against housing providers.

HB 5239 – Landlords must pay relocation assistance equal to three times their monthly rent to any tenant if a health or safety hazard at the property has been caused or allowed its owner.

HB 5240 – Requires property owners to afford the right of first refusal to their tenants or a tenants association. If the tenant or an association offers a price that is at least as favorable as the offer from another purchaser, or at least the appraised value of the property, the landlord would have to sell the property to the tenant or association.

preventing landlords from using criminal background checks for renters

Does that law protect the landlord if he rented to a criminal and that criminal attacked another renter?

I guess she wants to drive all privately owned rental housing out.
She knows exactly what she’s doing.
Government will then takeover all of the rental housing.

If these bills become law, ten years from now there will be a housing shortage in Michigan.

I had renter problems with the first, only and last rent house I will ever own, so I burned it. It was an OK little house but just not worth the trouble. I acquired another piece of property this year with another house on it, I’ll burn and bury it as well. I never want to mess with renters ever again. They are dead beats and they trash your property and then you have to go through all the effort of evicting them and repairing your property. Being a landlord, you can have it.

In Seattle where this has been implemented, NOPE!
As others have mentioned, the goal is to eliminate all privately owned property.

I have an EXTENSIVE screening process (which Demonrats want to elminate) Out of about 100 inquiries, maybe 2-4 are qualified. The rent are unrentables. C19 and the moratoriums have exploded the tenant hubris exponentially.

The under 30 set believe housing is a human right and should be free. Hint: You can learn a lot from social media!
Self employed? Provide 3 years of certified tax returns.
Animals? Fill out this extensive application with uploaded documents. The parasite class won’t even bother.

She calls herself nonbinary, as such she’s mentally unstable.

Suggest MI elect serious, rational and normal adults. Otherwise you get freak show socialist legislation like this.

tenant or an association offers a price that is at least as favorable as the offer from another purchaser, or at least the appraised value of the property, the landlord would have to sell the property to the tenant or association = forced to sell to demonrats through force of law/violence. Got a 500K offer and another for the government’s appraised value of 350k. Forced to sell to the demonrats connected org for less.

This entire list or proposals is unconstitutional.

What this means is only big corporations will be lawyered up enough to make a profit as landlords. The “pro tenant” angle is misdirection for the rabble.
