US-bound flight takes off with two missing windows, reaches 15,000 feet before crew notices

A plane previously used by Britain’s King Charles and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was forced to turn around after reaching an altitude of 14,500 feet when crew members realized two of its windows were missing.

The Airbus A321 took off from London Stansted Airport for Orlando on Oct. 4 with windows that were damaged by high-powered lights used during a film shoot the day before, The Independent reported.

The Titan Airways aircraft was carrying 11 crew members and nine passengers who were employees of airline and the US-based luxury tour company TCS World Travel, according to an incident report by the Air Accidents Investigations Branch.

A crew member noticed after takeoff that the seal around one of the windows was “flapping” and that the noise in the cabin was “loud enough to damage your hearing,” according to the agency.

The crew reportedly discovered that two window assemblies – the inner and outer panes and rubber seals – were missing, and that only the plastic scratch panes remained in place.

The pilots stopped the climb and reduced the airspeed as the plane halted its transcontinental journey and headed back to London. There were no “abnormal indications” in the cockpit and that cabin remained pressurized “normally,” the AAIB said.

I thought it was more like 8000 ft equivalent air pressure.

“Perhaps too close to the plastic panes”

Read the OP.

“The reason they noticed the windows were missing because you need oxygen at that level.”

No,you don't. I've been at 14,200 feet (the top of Mount Evans in Colorado) and I didn't have any. But it is true that at that altitude you shouldn’t be doing anything that's physically taxing.

The plastic scratch panes remained in place. Grossly misleading headline.

The funny thing is the plastic scratch panes remained in place.

“Did anybody see you break it?”

“No.”

“Hide it!”

(... ever wonder if that’s how the outbreak at the Wuhan Institute of Virology started?)

Pretty much.
With the demonization of white men as toxic and useless, the unrestrained promiscuity of women seeking to sleep around until they’re 30, and then divorce raping men who do wife them up, too many of the trades are going begging for anyone competent.

The imported diversity hires have neither the drive, the competence, or the integrity, to fill in for them.

I guess, “Look for missing windows,” was not on the pre-flight checklist.

One could draw attention to the walkaround, however, I don’t know how many pilots actually have the long line of windows on both sides of a passenger liner on their list of things to check. Especially in the dark, not that their walkaround was in the dark, just saying.

I’d want to see a daylight picture of the takeoff from both sides of the runway to see if one could possibly notice something. I believe the scratch panel is on the inside of the aircraft. If the actual two pane window was missing, it might have been noticed if someone happened to be looking for it which would be unlikely in the first place.

If the windows were actually missing it should have appeared in the maintenance documents which get reviewed before takeoff.

If anyone has been to the UK in the last 30 years, you’ll know how unsurprising this is. It’s been a 2nd world mess since they went back to appeasement after WWII, like much of continental Europe too. I was really ashamed and dumbfounded to have seen that mess. It’s coming to America as strong as it did back the. For Europe as long as liberals are in power. Sad, but true.

Huh? That must be one heck of a pressurization system.

You'd apparently be surprised by how good the standard pressurization system really is. The total loss of one or two windows (which, contra the headline, this was not) won't affect it in the slightest. Everything you learned about cabin (de)pressurization from the movies is wrong.
