Officials said that the new bomb is intended to be capable of an explosive yield equivalent to 340 kilotons of TNT- approximately 23 times the destructive power of the one dropped on Hiroshima at the end of World War II.
For example, if exploded over downtown Manhattan, an estimated 1.1 million people would be killed, while a further 2.1 million would be injured.
A strike on Washington D.C., would result in a smaller loss of life, with an estimated 360,000 losing their life, as well as some 613,000 injured.
But it would also destroy some of the nation's most significant symbols, with the White House, the U.S. Capitol building, the Supreme Court, and the Lincoln Memorial all leveled.

The U.S. DoD is developing a weapon and I can understand why the article gives an example of how it’s yield would affect a city like New York, but it continues on down with DC, Los Angeles, and Chicago. It seems a bit morbid and dark. If it’s our weapon, why are we running down the effects it would have on all of our cities?
Use 2 as directed and return us to Constitutional rule.
Not nearly as powerful as the Dong Feng 5 but 1/3 megaton seem to be an ideal yield for multiple re-entry missiles.
Because its relatable I guess. How many it would kill in Tehran less so I suppose.
It’s just another unguided “dropped” bomb like the first one ever used, except it’s over 30 times more powerful, which is pretty typical of a lot of our nuke arsenal.
This site makes it “fun”.

You just pick a spot on a map similar to google maps and then choose your nuke type. When you hit the “detonate” button, it shows you rings of damage. Once you see it, you realize that the bombs used in Japan were actually prety small. They were just big compared to what came before them. And they were especially effective against wood and paper buildings.
I appreciate the death estimates they gave if a bomb hit New York and Washington DC.
Why stop there? Tell us more of the deaths if such a bomb hit San Francisco, Portland, Austin or Minneapolis?
What about the Washington Monument? Wasn’t mentioned here?
“If it’s our weapon, why are we running down the effects it would have on all of our cities?”
I’m waiting for someone to make a reply where they are salivating over such strikes.
But I do see your point. They should have used Moscow, Peking or Tehran as examples.
(I’m old school - Peking will always be Peking and Saigon will always be Saigon, no matter what the commies say)
What officials?Names please !
What’s there to bomb in Minneapolis? They seem to be doing the job on their own.
See my post number 6.
He says that as if that would be a bad thing.
you mean like the general Lee statue they melted. down
You have discerned my reason for posing this article.
I think you make a very good point, and it tells us nothing about the bomb’s effect on what it was designed to destroy and its purpose.
It’s a message for someone...
(Are you guys really sure that you gonna start axin’ questions about the next steal?)
Boom goes London
And boom Paris
More room for you
And more room for me
And every city the whole world round
Will just be another American town
Oh, how peaceful it’ll be
We’ll set everybody free
You’ll have Japanese kimonos, baby
There’ll be Italian shoes for me
They all hate us anyhow
So let’s drop the big one now
Let’s drop the big one now
