Biden announces $16 billion for Amtrak rail improvements in Northeast Corridor

President Joe Biden announced Monday the federal government will pump more than $16 billion into improving the nation’s busiest rail line.

At an event in Delaware on Monday, Biden said the funding will go into more than two dozen projects along the Northeast Corridor – the Amtrak system that connects cities including Washington, New York and Boston.

Biden hailed the new investments, saying he knew the agony of waiting on a stopped train while trying to get home.

“I know how much it matters,” he said, describing an aging system in dire need of upgrades and repairs.

His words held particular resonance as trains nearby were stopped due to fire department activity on the tracks. It wasn’t clear whether the issue was related to the problems his new investments are meant to fix.

Biden told the hometown crowd that he was intent on making US rail first-rate.

Biden told the hometown crowd that he was intent on making US rail first-rate.

No where in the US Constitution gives any part of government the power to take from the many to give a few a subsidized ride on a train. Defund Amtrak and privatize. If you want first-rate then you can’t have lazy ass government employees running it. Plus Amtrak should be defunded to spite Joe Biden and all the leftists that use it.

Accurate title: "Biden announces extravagant vote-buying scheme for railroad unions."

California was supposed to have high speed rail. After billions of government dollars there is no rail line.

A private company, Brightline, operates high speed rail in Florida.

if it the “busiest rail line” why would it need a $16 billion Governments subsidy?

Why are user fees not paying the tab?

Amtrak was created because competition from interstate highways and the airlines had driven down revenues, pushing passenger losses yet higher. Penn Central had the biggest deficit of all. As Jervis Langdon, a trustee of Penn Central, recalled, “Hauling passengers was killing railroads in the Northeast.” Therefore, Judge John Fullam, who was presiding over its bankruptcy, ordered the railroad to shut down its passenger trains.

The NE Rail corridor is 457 miles long

That is about $35,000,000 per mile!

Would that include paying someone to clean the restrooms onboard on Fridays?

Biden actually claimed that Amtrak gave him the key to all the locomotives,
and that he rides in the cab and helps the engineer drive the train.

This is only when Biden isn't zooming down the interstate driving an 18 wheeler

This is part of the 2 trillion dollar infrastructure bill. He’s got a way to go before he spends it all. Everything he’s doing is because congress voted for it.

Agree Biden going to handing out a lot of fish stories for the election but he’s not going to be in it.

He’s going to have a lot of trial time with the family they can kiss off the profits they made from China an others.

Brightline is also set to begin construction on a high speed rail from LA to Las Vegas. Odds are great that Brightline West will be up and running before California HSR even begins to lay track.

Thanks for that. Yes, private rail could most definitely be successful. I don't know what form it would take - that's up to private entreprenuers.

They way the present US rail system is composed is a highly-regulated, socialist-style oligopoly, where Fed.gov runs loss-making commuter trains, and private rail control rights-of-way and freight, with strong government oversight.

The problem with Amtrac is that it is a subsidized transportation service that is basically uneconomic. Functionally, it needs a culture shift so that tickets pay a much higher portion of the costs of running the service.

What will be required is a total change in how the service is provided. Someone needs to look at how other countries provide decent rail passenger service and how that differs from what is done in the USA.

So many believe in the “field of dreams” approach to mass transportation......if you build it they will come. It doesn't work, it just throws more money into an ever expanding pit with no good results.

At the moment the great dream is that building bullet trains or improving the rail lines so that trains can go much faster will attract more paying passengers. You can't go faster if you don't have controlled intersections of roads and rails and if you don't have independent passenger only high speed right of way.

This is going to be a waste of money that I hope fails to pass the House of Representatives. Counting down the days until the government spending authority shuts down.

It doesn't, but the rest of Amtrak does, so the profits from the Boston-DC corridor fund Amtrak as a whole, and the "investment" makes up the difference plus some more $$$ for Friends of Joe/Dems.

Well this would require the Eco fanatics to realizes the US is so much larger then the countries in EU that have spent almost 2 centuries building their rail nets. To suggest that what works for a rail system in England or German can translate to the US is irrational
