Illinois state education administrators celebrated academic progress in 2023, but student achievement is still behind where it was before COVID-19 hit. Chronic absenteeism remained high. Enrollment dropped again.
Illinois state education administrators are celebrating “strong progress” for Illinois students as proficiency in both reading and math increased between 2022 and 2023...
But what remained consistent was fewer students were performing at or above grade level in 2023 than prior to the pandemic.
The data shows only 35% of students could read at grade level in 2023. Only 27% met proficiency in math.
Illinois Superintendent of Education Tony Sanders said the state has a “significant distance to travel” toward recovery after pandemic-era school closures caused record-low proficiency rates statewide.
Reading proficiency remains 6% lower in 2023 than in 2019, the last test data prior to pandemic-era school closures, and 15% lower in math.

Illinois State Board of Education data on the Illinois Assessment of Readiness reports 35% of third- through eighth-grade students could read at grade level in spring 2023 and 27% were proficient in math. This marks a 17% and 6% increase in proficiency rates since 2022.
But proficiency for Illinois students still falls short of pre-pandemic levels.
In 2018-2019, the final school year before the state implemented COVID-19 mitigations, nearly 38% of students in third through eighth grades were proficient in reading and 32% in math.

Other areas state leaders highlighted included the high school graduation rate, which sits at 87.6% for the class of 2023 – the highest it has been in 13 years. But students in this graduating class of 2023 who completed high school in four years were among the 11th grade students who took the state-required SAT in spring 2022. Just 30% met grade-level standards in reading and 29% in math.
Current Illinois 12th-grade students scored on average nearly 12 points lower in reading and 25 points lower in math on the SAT this past spring as juniors compared to juniors in 2019. Just 32% of current seniors could read at grade level and 27% performed math proficiently on the SAT in spring 2023.

Chronic absenteeism remains high..
Chronic absenteeism in Illinois and nationwide skyrocketed following the pandemic. In Illinois, the high levels of chronic absenteeism have remained steady.
In the 2022-2023 school year, 28% of Illinois students were chronically absent, marking a 5% decrease from the previous school year but still nearly 62% higher than the 2018-2019 school year. Chronic absenteeism is measured by missing 10% or more of the school year – typically 18 instruction days – with or without an excused absence.

Illinois public schools enrolled 1,857,790 students in the 2022-2023 school year. That marked a drop of 11,535 students last school year compared to the previous 2021-2022 school year. The ISBE stated the overall trend of declining enrollment tracks with trends in birth rates nationwide.
This past school year saw the biggest jump in enrollment of English learners in five years, with a nearly 13% increase since 2019. But state educators did not outline what percent of that increase is because of new migrant students, especially in Chicago Public Schools.
Only liberal-controlled systems, can those in charge fail miserably, and not suffer any consequences.

Remember in New York, not only the hapless students but the teachers often failed reading tests.

I can’t be the only one thinking it’s all the illegals in Chicago that brought the GPA up.
1. In HELLINOIS it's near IMPOSSIBLE to flunk a student. Thanks to school administrators, the hoops a teacher has to go through to flunk a student are so many, and the burden so high, most teachers don't bother.
2. The reason kids are below national average and recovering slower is due to the dumbed down testing in the schools. Here again, it's damn' near impossible to give a kid a failing grade. School Administrators don't want to deal with the parents complaining that their little Johnnie isn't the problem, the teacher is.
3. Related to #2 above, many teachers have quit teaching, while still being in the classroom. Work is handed out, kids are supposed to 'figure it out on their own' then ask questions. They're told to 'work in groups' to solve problems. Teachers grade the 'work product' generously.
4. Parents. Let's be honest: most don't give a damn'. There it is. Have at it.

You'd be incorrect.
11% of Chicago Public School students are White.
2% are Asian.
The remainder are Black and Hispanic.
It's statistically highly improbable that 11% and 2% impacted the GPA enough to make a significant difference.
Are not a significant portion of the remaining 87% then made up of illegals who are of largely Hispanic origin?
The illegals are primarily from South American countries and speak little to no english.
Not exactly sure why you'd think they'd actually be bringing the already quite low GPA up at all. Care to explain that?

Surely. We know that Chicago is notorious for youth especially in the gang/murder/shooting department, many of these kids never learn to read, math and so forth and in the end if they stay out of prison they still are unable to attain a decent job because of these limitations. OTOH many of the border stampeders in the big cities (Chicago in this case) are brought in by the parents and are enlisted in public schools. It is these kids who learn English and basic skills because they want to, not because they are littered/tainted by the ghetto life that they are familiar with.
Would think that this sort of situation might raise test scores a bit.
Only 27% proficiency in math, so 73% don’t know if two thirds not meeting reading proficiency is a good thing or a bad thing.
it's IMPOSSIBLE for teachers in Chicago to flunk any student. CPS (Chicago Public Schools Admin) and CTU (Chicago Teachers Union) have such stringent rules in place, teachers won't bother taking the time & effort to flunk anyone as it endangers their own job in doing so.
Immigrants aren't improving GPA's. They're just more chattle for CTU and CPS to manipulate.
CPS and CTU are also why there's a substantial decline in enrollment in Chicago schools. Families with the means are moving OUT of the city and out of CPS and CTU territory.
Those that may not be moving out are either homeschooling (doubtful, IMO) or sending to private schools (doubtful but perhaps in some limited cases.)
What this means is that CPS' GPA would very more than likely be DROPPING, not rising.
Look at the enrollment stats for CPS: @14% White and Asian. Rest minorities.
Whites, Asians and those minorities with means are moving OUT of Chicago.
The only logical conclusion one can draw with all this knowledge, is that CPS and CTU are inflating the GPA Averages. No other conclusion including mass illegal immigration makes sense. Statistically impossible.
