A video released by the Illinois State Police shows a driver stepping out of his car and opening fire on a trooper. Another video shows the driver appearing to chase the fleeing trooper to continue the alleged assault. The trooper and the driver are hospitalized with gunshot wounds.
Illinois State Police released a video from a traffic stop that officials allege shows a driver, later identified as Cristobal Santana, shooting at Trooper Dakotah Chapman Green. The video, published by KSDK NBC5, shows the traffic stop in a residential neighborhood in Springfield, Illinois, on October 24.

My son was in his dorm at the time (U of I Springfield) and heard the shots and knew what they were. He expected some kind of notification from the school or campus security, but nothing came out warning them.

Some may compare it to typical shotguns or to an AR-15 or AR-10 and identify shortcomings against both typical shotguns or rifles, but for law enforcement in particular, an AR-12 could serve well:
-the rounds travel shorter distances with lethality, and thus lessen risk to innocent lives
-depending on the ammunition, it can be used to stop a threat from an attacker on foot as well as in a vehicle.
-12 gauge slugs or buckshot are less likely to deflect when passing through automobile glass or body panels
-a 12 gauge slug or buckshot is more likely to damage an automobile engine with a single shot than 5.56 or 9mm ammunition
-12 gauge small game ammunition with a decent spread would more easily puncture a tire, especially on a moving vehicle, and keep bystanders at less risk, than a 9mm or 5.56 bullet
-while weight would normally be an issue for someone on foot, having it in a vehicle removes most of that consideration
It's never set right with me that feckless criminals (attempted murder, attempted rape, etc) get lighter punishment than criminals who are good at their job. Anybody who tries to kill a cop already has made a full confession to their character and deserves to be permanently removed from the company of mankind.
