SHOWDOWN: Biden would veto House GOP’s Israel aid package, White House says

President Biden would veto a package put forward by House Republicans to provide aid to Israel while cutting funding for the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and leaving out funding for other national security priorities, the White House said Tuesday.

The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) picked apart the House GOP proposal in a lengthy statement of administration policy, arguing it “inserts partisanship into support for Israel” and fails to meet the moment by leaving out humanitarian assistance for the people of Gaza and aid for Ukraine and allies in the Indo-Pacific.

“This bill is bad for Israel, for the Middle East region, and for our own national security,” the OMB said.

The White House further asserted that the GOP proposal marks a break from bipartisan precedent by seeking funding cuts as part of an emergency national security package.

“Congress has consistently worked in a bipartisan manner to provide security assistance to Israel, and this bill threatens to unnecessarily undermine that longstanding approach,” the OMB said. “Bifurcating Israel security assistance from the other priorities in the national security supplemental will have global consequences.”

Tuesday’s statement from the OMB said the administration would continue to work with lawmakers in Congress to secure an agreement on the supplemental request put forward earlier this month by the White House.

The GOP package unveiled Monday would provide $14.3 billion in aid for Israel in its battle against Hamas, the militant group that controls Gaza that carried out terrorist attacks on Oct. 7, which left roughly 1,400 Israelis dead.

The proposal would cut IRS funding included in the Inflation Reduction Act, a sweeping tax, health and climate bill signed into law last year as one of Biden’s signature policy accomplishments.

Freepers: Wherever you stand on the aid I reckon this is a showdown or fight worth having.

The GOP needs to hold the line and let him veto the aid to Israel.

When did the OMB becone a political agency? Guess we’re going to have to defund it, and create an agency, in it’s place, that is in charge of balancing our budget, through accurate, and non-partisan
budget forcasts.

” hold the line “

Yes ... now is the time ... this is the issue ..

The tide can turn if the line is held.

This battle will set the field.

On the immediate measure, due to Senate Dem support, the Biden White House may get its way after a veto. The House GOP though has an effective fallback: a government shutdown in a few weeks unless the IRS cuts and other measures are accepted.

I would hope the GOP wouldn’t “cave” on such an emotional issue. They often do but 90% of the time the average American doesn’t have any understanding of the subject.

I think not. Not only is the new House GOP Speaker a different sort, but Matt Gaetz and his allies are there to stiffen the spines of the House GOP caucus, with Steve Bannon and his War Room posse and Trump himself poised to rain fire and brimstone on any who waver.

Absolutely right. Strong leadership gives courage to otherwise weak men.

There could be other off-sets for increased aid to Ukraine. Maybe re-opening energy development. As for aid to Gaza, no. As for increased aid to illegal aliens, no. As for aid to Taiwan, I don’t think we’re talking of aid, but rather increased defense spending. There could be yet other off-sets.

Instead of adding another $108 billion to the deficit per Biden’s request, let’s see if we can hold the line. As it is, the deficit currently is $2.7 trillion, and that’s way, way too high.

So much for our “unwavering support” for Israel.

Someone needs to nuke DC and a handful of the biggest DNC cities to get the at the shear numbers of rotten politicians and their grassroots organizations. It is the DNC as much as it is the USG as it is the CIA, rinse and repeat.

One of the biggest problems w/Congress.

It’s got to be an omnibus spending bill or nothing because they can’t get enough folks to sign up for it.

Since they can’t break that habit, it’ll be the ruin of us.

It wouldn't be a "House" bill after the Senate concurs.

Then it would be Biden who is the obstructionist. Why would Biden veto a bill that Schumer signed off on?

The IRS 87,000 new agents equals about six Army divisions.
