I've attended some presentations on mental health, and the most frequent hallucination befalling schizophrenics is auditory (voices). And, the voices are rarely kind or friendly

I have undergone a "hearing voices" exercise as part of law enforcement Crisis Intervention Team training.

You wear a headset and various voices...sometimes right ear only, sometimes left ear only, sometimes two or more voices in both ears saying stuff like "you are a loser" or "you are such a rotten creature that you do not deserve to live".

In training there is a volume control.

In real life there is none.
