Israeli forces released footage of the "Iron Sting" system launching a mortar bomb to take out a rocket launcher in its first-ever use in an operation on Sunday.
The Iron Sting, described as "an innovative and accurate mortar bomb," is one of a variety of weapons being used to thwart dozens of terrorists, the Israeli Air Force posted on X, along with video it said showed the 120mm mortar decimating an enemy rocket launcher. The Israeli army used the weapons system in conjunction with the Israeli Air Force.
The weapons system uses a "precise, laser and GPS guided mortar munition" to engage targets in dense, urban environments while "reducing the possibility of collateral damage and preventing injury to non-combatants," Elbit Systems, which developed the system, said in a 2021 news release.
"Its operational use will revolutionize ground warfare and equip battalions with organic, accurate and effective firepower," the release said.

Perhaps what Israel should do is drop pictures of the slaughtered Israeli babies after they demolish another building. I seem to recall from some years ago a system under development being reported in “Aviation Week & Space Technology” magazine — back when regular people could still read it — that would detect incoming theatre rounds — either artillery or rocket, quickly dispatch an out-going pin-point guided response round which would land on the original shooter’ positions BEFORE thier round even hit it’s target.
Kinda a “Quick-draw McGraw” deal. Then, I never heard any more about it. (I’m guessing it worked, and went black.)
I’m guessing that’s a pretty good guess...
That was invented during WWII. It was called "counter-battery radar."
Early versions didn't work that well, but they were steadily improved.
The AN/MPQ-4 was a counter-battery radar that worked pretty well. It was used in Vietnam.
We have had smart mortars for many years.
The innovation here is likely the payload, which sends back images as well as delivering destruction.

Not ignorance. They are doing it on purpose.
Lower civilian casualties is a benefit but is not the reason for the development of such weapons. Greater accuracy of firepower makes for greater efficiency, which in turns makes for greater effectiveness and lower cost. The US Army, for example, has disbanded conventional tube artillery units because modern, highly accurate munitions mean that far fewer rounds need to be fired. That has the further benefit of reducing the manpower and logistics that have to be fielded.
The Israelis shouldn’t feel obligated to treat monsters as humans.
The only thing left for Israel to do is to raze Gaza. Otherwise, Hamas will rebuild and attack Israel again 10 years from now.

Counterbattery stuff works. In another life I’d come back as a red-leg rather than grunt but that is another story. The deployed version in the late 70s was nice. It got better.
What I, as an engineer before going in, was familiar with, worked quite well for purely gravity ballistic incoming rounds. The system back-calculated launch position and gave the info to FDC (fire direction control) Incoming stuff that steers via GPS, etc would give the old systems headaches.
Memory says some 4.2” mortar units had the FDC capability.
