We need a public option for pharmaceuticals
The Hill ^ | 10/20/2023 | WILLIAM HASELTINE

America is currently facing dual public health crises of record drug shortages and skyrocketing prices. Several critical medicines are in short supply, including at least 14 essential generic cancer drugs, ADHD treatments, antibiotics, and even children’s acetaminophen. Americans also spend more on prescription drugs per capita than people in any other country. A quarter of adults surveyed in 2022 said that they or a member of their household have not filled a prescription, cut pills in half or skipped doses of medicine because of cost. This number will likely increase as the cost of living continues to rise.

The long-term solution to both these issues is to develop a robust public pharmaceutical option that produces and distributes essential medicines

Trump had the solution when he signed an EO, requiring that Big Pharma sell their wares for the same price they sell to the world. Bidon cancelled that.

A lack of ADHD “treatments” is a good thing. Just remember that they are amphetamines and your children need to come off slowly.

Yeah, let’s put the government in charge of pharmaceuticals!...................

These people are crazy, eliminate health insurance as we know it and go back to fee for service. Major medical plans only for the occassional heart attack,stroke...

Prices will crash by 90% overnight.

My bill for blood clot test, diagnosis, treatment with insurance was $15k, without regular insurance i paid $2500 two months ago.

Big Pharma finds new drugs but not to help people. They often just tinker with the basic drug then patent the “new” drug so that they are protected and can have an exclusive for 7 to 11 years. Then they send it off to China to be produced at 5 cents on the dollar so they can continue to make exorbitant profits off the American consumer . The entire medical industrial complex is greedy and corrupt.

When I see a medical bill paid by my medical insurance, it lists what the doctor, hospital or procedure charge, what the insurance company pays and what I pay. The insurance company generally pays far less than what the doctor, hospital or procedure charge. SO - can we deduce that insurance companies serve to hold down the cost of medical services? Does government insurance (medicare/medicaid) do the same? Thoughts?

cut pills in half

How much of his was patient decided underdosing versus a doctor prescribing half a pill twice per day? Drugs are often charged per dose, thus one 5mg pill costs almost the same as a 10mg pill. Split the 10mg pill for two doses and the price drops by almost half.

Physicians of any ilk or specialty should not receive incentive pay to prescribe medication(s).

Pharma has shipped production of generic drugs, such as antibiotics, to India and China. Even simple saline solution is made there. As a result, we don’t make enough of these most common drugs here to supply our own people.

People howled when we found out that we don’t make enough zippers for our own military uniforms, yet we are quiet about this.

Yep, America is basically subsidizing cheap drugs for the rest of the world.

Which is the way it should be. If certain nations couldn't afford them, get Gates Foundation to step in and buy them.

I do that with 3 rx drugs. Two of the tablets are scored and break easily to about 1/2 tab.

One tab is very small and is not scored., the free pharmacy tablet splitter, basically destroys the little tablet. My wife had me grow my right thumb nail longer, and it works great to split the tablet. She learned that trick from a patient in the Family Practice office, where she worked.
