WASHINGTON — Almost seven out of every 10 U.S. troops are either overweight or obese, according to a new report, which also warns the growing trend could compromise military readiness and undermine national security.
The American Security Project, a Washington-based nonprofit organization that studies modern national security issues, conducted the study and found 68% of active-duty service members fall somewhere between overweight and obese on the body mass index, which is a long-used but controversial method of assessing a person’s body classification by height and weight. A person between 25 and 30 on the BMI is considered clinically overweight and more than 30 is considered obese, according to the National Institutes of Health.
“Rapid and sustained recurrence of obesity across all services, ranks and positions now poses a dire threat, especially for at-risk populations and those in critical combat roles,” the group’s report states. “Designing an effective strategy to monitor and tackle obesity within the U.S. military begins by treating it like any other chronic disease.”

Do they have soldiers do 20 mile hikes anymore?
What is the biological sex and racial breakdown for this data?
It’s best to put all the buts and howevers to bed.
The military is fat and is not going to win against the studs in the Chinese army. This is just reality. The doods who say they are BMI 30 because they are muscular are one of several things
1) Delusional or
2) layered with muscles of no use if told the radios are shot up and we need them to sprint a message to headquarters or
3) Demanding an end to fat shaming abuse and filing a lawsuit
You can’t see numbers of recruitment shortfalls via fat and stupid and in the next breath sit back in confidence that deploying US troops somewhere will define victory.
It won’t. It risks exposure. We would be well advised to mind our own business and stop trying to swagger and influence world affairs — because we don’t have a military that can do that.
Ain’t the truth. About 6-700 calories a pop.
Haha!
Yep. You get it. I’m 5’10” 190lbs. Low body fat. Long time weight lifter. I’m obese by the BMI metric but am in tip top shape. Also a competitive rucker.
To be honest, BMI is meaningless, virtually 100% of the NFL are overweight or obese.
......ahhhhhh...ya just gotta love those Beretta 92 series/M9 pistols....but why are their trigger fingers ON the trigger...? we were always taught to keep your damned fingers OFF the trigger until you are fully prepared to shoot your weapon.....yeah....Hollywood in action.....
The BMI charts were adjusted downward a few years ago.
Now almost all non-anorexics are “overweight”.
they lowered fitness standards so that women could pass.
Consequences.
Hmmm, genetically modified food source? I saw an ad somewhere that showed men and women from the 1950’s, versus now, after genetically modified is pretty much the norm. The difference is striking.
If you’re running a 9 minute mile at 61, well, I salute you sir!
Probably not...too many processed carbohydrates...they don't need to be "genetically modified" to account for the observed effect. The American diet is GROSSLY too high in carbs, and too low in protein and fat.
What’s the overlap with the percentage who don’t know which genitals they have?
You’re right. I’m 5’10” and I walk around about 215. I also lift weights and train pretty extensively. Not a whole lot on me moves. I’m told I’m “big and scary looking.” But my doctor laughed when he said that according to BMI, I’m obese. A 34 inch waist and a 48 inch sportcoat…..and I’m obese.
