The chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Michael McCaul, has publicly asserted that from several different sources it is now clear that Egypt warned Israel in advance that “something big” was about to happen in Gaza, and that that warning was ignored by Israel.
More on this can be found here: “Egypt warned Israel three days before Hamas massacre – US congressman,” Jerusalem Post, October 11, 2023:
US House Foreign Affairs Committee Chair Michael McCaul told reporters on Wednesday that Egypt had warned Israel three days before Hamas’s assault on southern Israel that “an event like this could happen,” according to US media.
“There seems to have been a failure of intelligence. We’re not quite sure how we missed it. We’re not quite sure how Israel missed it,” said McCaul after a classified briefing about the war.
“We know that Egypt had warned the Israelis three days prior that an event like this could happen. We know this event was planned perhaps as long as a year ago,” added the House Foreign Affair chair….
The Prime Minister’s Office has denied the reports, calling them “absolutely false” and stressing that “No message in advance has arrived from Egypt and the prime minister has neither spoken, nor met, with the head of Egyptian intelligence since the formation of the government, neither directly nor indirectly.”
It is entirely possible that such a warning never made it to the Prime Minister. Once the current war against Hamas is over, the government should investigate how high that warning did manage to go, and why it did not proceed all the way up the chain of command in time.
Egypt will certainly have to deny that it gave such a warning, lest the Palestinians use the fact of Egypt’s attempt to share intelligence with Israel as a weapon against El-Sisi’s government, with which Hamas has long been at odds, by portraying Cairo as a “traitor” to the Palestinian cause.
But Michael McCaul knows there are too many different sources for this story about an Egyptian warning for it not to be true. El-Sisi’s government, after all, has a vested information in helping Israel to foil any Hamas attack. Hamas is the local, Gazan branch of the Muslim Brotherhood. And the Muslim Brotherhood is the sworn enemy of the El-Sisi regime. which came to power after toppling, in a coup, the former President and MB stalwart, Mohamed Morsi in 2013.
In defense of the Israeli government, it could be argued that the warning was too vague to be of much value. But is that true? If you — Prime Minister Netanyahu, or IDF Chief Herzi Halevi, or Mossad director David Barnea, or those just below them — are told with a sense of great urgency, by the Egyptians, with whom you have been sharing (giving and receiving) intelligence for years, that “something big” is just about to happen in Gaza, wouldn’t that at least cause a movement of troops and armored vehicles, and even tanks, from the center of the country to the border of Gaza?
Of course, for the Israeli government to admit that it had received such warnings, but that they had never reached the highest echelon, will simply not do as an excuse. Twelve hundred dead Israelis are on everyone’s mind. The popular fury over the government’s failure to understand the significance of the Egyptian warning and to heed it, at the very least by moving a few thousand IDF troops to the border, might in the future be so great as to bring down the Netanyahu government. But that won’t be until after the current campaign in Gaza is over, and when, with the country needing to figure out what went wrong, an independent inquiry is launched into the causes of this most colossal failure to detect, and derail early on, the murderous onslaught by Hamas.
Like 9/11. The USA had vague warnings about something big, but nobody had ever hijacked planes and crashed them into buildings.
Terrorists had attacked Israel many times, but never 1500 at a time. and Israel - like France c. 1939 - put too much reliance on a wall.
In any case, the lack of troops on the border was inexcusable. But recall Israel only has 169k active troops and (until now) no military threat near the Eqyptian border. They won’t make that mistake again.
There were warnings before Pearl Harbor too.
So, “something big is going to happen tomorrow.”
What will you do in preparation? Maybe wait to see what it is? What else can you do
Well, okay. But I’ll bet that the Mossad was getting all sorts of warnings every day. Sometime big is about to happen here. Something big is about to happen there.
As I see it, Israel’s biggest failure was their decision to keep weapons from their civilian population. It is one thing to fail to see a warning. It is quite another thing to deliberately choose to disarm your population.
An armed kibbutz could repel invaders. A disarmed kibbutz would be slaughtered. Men, women, children, babies. Unarmed. So dead or kidnapped.
It is a disgrace.
Hindsight is 20/20. People who criticize others for not exhibiting foresight they couldn’t credibly claim they would have exhibited are best described by one word: Azzhole.
20% of their population are Arabs. So they don't want them to have guns.
My opinion is the same: Factions in the Israeli intel & broader gov’t, along with US intel, knew an attack was coming but wished to set the Israeli state on fire to attempt to have the citizens cry out for the removal of Netanyahu.
But they erred by underestimating the scope of the slaughter.
Pres. Bush was passed a memo that Bin Ladin “might” use planes as weapons, but that had already been known for some time. The real failure was on the part of the CIA which refused to share information with the FBI, a policy created earlier by Clinton. The CIA knew all about the terrorist cell that highjacked the planes that day, but couldn’t do anything about it themselves. This being “Israel’s 9/11”, maybe a similar situation existed.
> 20% of their population are Arabs. So they don’t want them to have guns. <
Yes, that is a very good point! But it is also something that can be managed. Here’s how. Every Israeli military veteran should be given easy access to firearms.
This would fix the Arab objection, because those folks are exempt from Israeli military service. Few of them serve. So few of them get the guns, on the first try anyway.
Disarming is surrendering. Next comes cattle cars. Spartans and the folks in Gonzales new it. The lesson didn’t get out to everyone. They are all paying or have paid a price. History does repeat its self. It’s a shame and people are too lazy or stupid to let themselves be used this way. Me, I figure you may take it but it won’t be free or fun. Come and get it. Regards
Probably the same way we missed the warnings we had about 9/11. Some people saw it coming and tried to alert those who could, do something about it and they were ignored.
Whoever ignored it has blood on their hands.
To me, one of the most appalling and inhumane things happening these days is any government's willingness to sacrifice innocent human life to further their power grab agenda.
Kibbutz did have armed security
One repelled them
Not sure level of armed kibbutz citizenry
In my day there civvies had access to weapons on the frontier
Has that changed ?
if you dont know what I mean. theres a theory the Roosevelt knew pearl harbor was a target and knew the japanese were on the way. He just didnt do anything... except send every hawaii based carrier out to sea before the attack.
> Kibbutz did have armed security One repelled them <
Yes. But from what I’ve read, it was only because that kibbutz’s “security coordinator” took the initiative to open the local armory, and distribute weapons. If she had been a bit hesitant, or had been out in some field picking berries, everyone in that kibbutz would have been slaughtered.
Others here in Free Republic have mentioned that Israel is at heart a socialist country. And socialist countries would rather not have an armed citizenry. I don’t know how true that is.
But it sure does explain a lot of things.
McCaul is a warmonger. He’s obviously indebted to the MIC.
October 5 : Biden Reverses Course And Plans New Border Wall Construction
What did Joe Biden know or learn around this time?
The day after this supposed warning from Egypt to Israel was when Biden mysteriously decided he wanted to reverse his border wall policy and begin rebuilding the Trump wall
The Left Deep State exists in Israel too. Just as Trump was under minded and back-stabbed at every turn by the military, Intelligence, DOJ, etc., so has been Bibi.
Take the Left’s big battle against judicial reform that was drummed up across their society. It split Israel in half including the military, with people refusing to report for duty in the reserves. They were very upset that their judges wouldn’t be able to pick their own replacements anymore, thus ending the Left’s tyrannical lock on the judiciary.
Poor Bibi. I think, like Trump, he didn’t realize the viciousness of the snakes in their garden. Their media us just as F’ked up as the rest of the West’s too.
