Israel bombed areas of southern Gaza where it had told Palestinians to flee to ahead of an expected ground invasion, killing dozens of people on Tuesday in attacks it says are targeted at Hamas militants that rule the besieged territory.

The Hamas-run Health Ministry in the Gaza Strip said at least 500 people were killed in an explosion Tuesday that it said was caused by an Israeli airstrike on a Gaza City Hospital. If confirmed, the attack on the al-Ahli Hospital in Gaza City would be by far the deadliest Israeli airstrike in five wars fought since 2008.

I work from home and have been following this story pretty closely. In addition, my abilities as a news hound are, self certifiably, second to none.

I can tell you this: Nothing over the past 12 days has hit with the rapid reaction as this hospital story today. And that's saying something, because the story has been incredibly fast moving from the start:

Usually, when you get this kind of broad, quick, vitriolic response to something, it makes me think that not only the event but the response was planned. Could be natural, I suppose.

If planned, I'd say it's more likely the Hamas side. But could be the Israeli side. Could be a faction of the Israeli side, not the official Israeli side. Same with Hamas.

Either way, everything changed today. Things were looking better over the weekend, but they are worse now. Next up, does Biden cancel event? Or, does Biden come in and smooth everything over, seal the deal, earn the peace prize?
