As Israel escalates its attacks on Gaza, the State Department is discouraging diplomats working on Middle East issues from making public statements suggesting the U.S. wants to see less violence, according to internal emails viewed by HuffPost.
In messages circulated on Friday, State Department staff wrote that high-level officials do not want press materials to include three specific phrases: “de-escalation/ceasefire,” “end to violence/bloodshed” and “restoring calm.”
The revelation provides a stunning signal about the Biden administration’s reluctance to push for Israeli restraint as the close U.S. partner expands the offensive it launched after Hamas ― which rules Gaza ― attacked Israeli communities on Oct. 7.

Trying to keep them from turning into whimpering fools when they take care of business
At least not in public view.
Blynkin needs to be asking Iran to take in Gaza refugees.
This time it feels different. No calls for restraint like you would usually hear from the Americans.
Maybe they see this as an attempt by other powers to get them involved in another attrition war like Ukraine, so they are going to have to make some real strategic victories in the near term.
Nah. I think it’s more simple. The Muslims in Gaza are scum.
Iran is paying the big guy for this to get their funds relaxed and stop their operatives who crossed the border illegally. The palistinians have been pawns for 70 years
This is not only because Israel and the US are such close allies... This is because Israel and the US have the tacit blessing of the major players in the region. They all want to see the Hamas and Hamas-ideological types diminished. Egypt, Palestinian Authority, Jordan, Lebanon, and most of the Arab bloc as well. They don’t necessarily like it, but they see it as necessary and no alternatives - Hamas and their brethren are not interested in peace not with Israel or with moderate Islam rulers. The more moderate middle east leaders want normalization and prosperity and peace.
It’s an election year with Dems failing miserably on all fronts ... this is merely to give the illusion that the Biden administration has any aptitude for foreign policy competence ... which they do not.

Bingo!
There’s an old military rule that to maintain discipline never give orders that won’t be obeyed. For example Gen Washington ordered that Continental Soldiers couldn’t curse or swear. He should have known better.
The Capt of a destroyer I was on ordered that crewmen couldn’t buy or own motorcycles. Another ridiculous failure.
Orders to Israel to back off will be as effective as the above two. It’s surprising to see the Biden Administration show such wisdom.
“Nah. I think it’s more simple. The Muslims in Gaza are scum.”
No. Even more simple. 2024 election is real soon. Gazan terrorists revealed themselves to the world as monsters that the old media could not ignore. This administration and the Obama administration has spent years funding the monsters. The administration needs the secular Jewish vote to win. So it’s tough Joe Biden until the election.
Coming down on Israel in public will have to wait until after November 2024.
That and the reaction to Putin calling for it.
I’m imagining a scenario where the US starts off with a phone call:
“We’d like you guys to show some restraint.”
“Look, if we show restraint, we show weakness. If we show weakness, this things drags out and it gets nasty. Lebanon jumps in. Syria jumps in. This is bad. If it gets bad, there is a REALLY good chance that we will nuke Damascus and Tehran. Just letting you know. So, let us go in quick, do whatever Israel feels in necessary, and we get this over with fast and nobody getting nuked. How does that sound?”
“We will tell our people not to talk about restraint.”
What you said, 100% !
“As Israel escalates its attacks on Gaza”
Stopped reading right there.
If true then credit where credit is due.
