The United Auto Workers union launched an unexpected strike against Ford Motor at the automaker’s highly profitable SUV and pickup truck plant in Kentucky.
The strike was effective at 6:30 p.m. ET Wednesday at Ford’s Kentucky Truck Plant, where the automaker produces Ford Super Duty pickups as well as the Ford Expedition and the Lincoln Navigator SUVs. The facility employs 8,700 UAW members.
The strike at the plant — Ford’s largest in terms of employment and revenue — marks a major escalation in the UAW’s targeted, or “stand-up,” strikes. It also represents a shift in strategy now in the fourth week of expanded strikes. For previous work strikes, UAW President Shawn Fain has publicly announced the targets before the work stoppages occur.
A Ford source said the union informed the company early Wednesday afternoon that it wanted a new economic counteroffer by 5 p.m. ET, followed by a meeting request for 5:30 p.m. ET with the UAW’s entire Ford bargaining committee, including Fain and union Vice President Chuck Browning.

Yes, cut off production of new four-wheel-drive trucks and SUVs please. I have a Hummer H3 that I am putting on the market at the end of the month, and I will benefit by the lack of availability of new vehicles, used prices will begin go up! Thank you UAW.

Well, they perform just as well in one solid color with no optional equipment (although air conditioning is probably a must for half the country). So save money and reduce the number of people needed to make the trucks.

Make the counteroffer half what they get now. Halve it every time they reject the counteroffer until you get down to minimum wage with no benefits.
Strikes against companies can put them in bankruptcy. Strikes against governments can cause them to raise taxes.

If the UAW was striking to stop the headlong abandonment of ICE vehicles, I’d support them 100%.
It's funny, they are striking for higher pay and abbreviated careers. I get the first, not the second.
I was at the local Ford dealership last night. They were open later than usual and the lot was full of new trucks. There were no customers in sight and the visitor’s lot was uncharacteristically empty. If this is representative of the rest of the country then the UAW could not have chosen a worse moment, from their perspective, to initiate a strike.
I’m seeing YouTube videos from the car dealers I follow that the new and used car market across the entire country is in collapse. I’m sure there are exceptions, but if manufactures need to slow down production, this is the ideal moment for them to fight off a strike. Also, I don’t think the Democrats have their backs. (’Cause global warming or the revolution or something...)

Why won’t the unions strike the Ford EV plant?
Good points. I just have had my fill of working on vehicles with overly complicated systems. Example: I have done some work on a relative’s Mercyless (Mercedes) suv. The wire bundles are everywhere. What a mess.
We bought an 07 Highlander in 2015 that is ‘plain jane’. At first my wife was disappointed with the manual control seats. But after finding how much quicker she could change the positioning, she likes them just fine. It just rolled over 300k miles last weekend, and still runs good. Aiming for 400k.

Toyota’s making all their pickup trucks in the US these days sans unions. Nissan makes trucks in the US as well - I don’t think there will be a shortage of 4WD trucks per se, just the UAW’s poorly assembled crap. No loss there, IMHO.
Most vehicles these days *are* one solid color.
And market forces have caused many formerly optional extras to now be standard in many segments. Including power windows, power locks and aircon.
