Good question JP, why ARE you trying to insert Ukraine into this? The article clearly states that Hamas says it has been planning this for two years. That would be about half a year before Russia’s surprise invasion of Ukrain the end of February, 2022. An additional question is why did a Hamas delegation of high officials go to Moscow two weeks before this attack for official meetings if Russia had NOTHING to do with any of this?

What does “Hamas arming their people” really mean. Are their people other Hamas members or the Palestinian people? Current behavior does not look as if Hamas cares much about the Palestinian people. In fact it appears Biden’s restoring aid to the Palestinian people is one reason Hamas started making these plans 2 years ago. Hamas would not like the US gaining any favor for helping the Palestinians as it would reduce Hamas power for being the prime source of aid. One idea I read elsewhere even suggests that Netenyahu (sp?) may have not been totally unhappy that the more liberal types living in kibutzes or attending musical parties got hit hard. Those have been the folks who have been fighting his attempts to remold the judiciary to his linking. It was also suggested that since the military has been facing some criticism recently, they might not have responded as quickly as they could have. At any rate, Netenyaho now has full license to tear up Hamas, and not so much sympathy left for what happens to the Palestinian people in the process.
Anyway I’m going back to Ukraine where the duplicity and lies are easier to figure out, and where Russia is so clearly in the wrong.

Russia rarely gets involved in humanitarian action. It never does anything neutral. It is annoyed at Russian Jews leaving Russia to live in Israel. It argues that the Jewish president of Ukraine is anti Semitic, it ignores open antisemitism on its flagship news channel on Russian TV.
I would never assume that Putin/Russia care about optics. I agree with your other observations.
