Comparing America to Israel on gun laws is dishonest – and revealing
The Times of Israel ^ | March 1, 2018 | HAVIV RETTIG GUR

There’s more. Once they are granted the right to carry a gun, Israelis are limited to just 50 bullets in their possession at any given time. They must shoot or return old bullets before they can buy new ones, a process that can only take place at tightly regulated shooting ranges where each bullet’s sale is carefully registered. The types of guns permitted also depend on the reason for the license – i.e., a veterinarian may only purchase a gun approved by the government for the killing of animals, a hunter’s license only permits the purchase of a firearm from an approved firearms list kept by the Parks Authority, and so forth.

In other words, as the Public Security Ministry explains on its website, Israeli law “does not recognize a right to bear arms, and anyone wanting to do so must meet a number of requirements, including a justified need to carry a firearm.” There is no inkling of a belief among Israelis that citizens should be permitted to own guns as a check on government power — that is, as a limit to the sovereignty of the state expressed in its monopoly on violence.

Yup. Wonder if the people who supported gun control in Israel now think that was a good idea?

Our American Constitution specifies "Shall Not Be Infringed". That's settled.

Israel can do whatever they want, none of my business.

Only 1.4 privately owned firearms in Israel per 100 people.

Not nearly enough.

So these current thugs are limited to number of rounds also?

I remember reading of the gun laws in Israel back in 1968. Could not believe my eyes that average people could not own guns for their own self protection in such a hostile environment!

Also, you have to demonstrate a need. One friend was denied because he lives in Jerusalem and he was denied and told Jerusalem is safe so you don’t need a gun. Maybe that will change.

“Comparing America to Israel on gun laws is dishonest – and revealing”

One of my first thoughts upon hearing of the attack on Israel was that Israel may have to re-think their gun policy, at least for the Jews there. After all, most of the Jews there have been in the military and are fully competent to handle a gun (except maybe for that bunch at the nudist rave, right next to Gaza).

Mr. Gur, in Texas, 300 Hamas punks attacking a music concert would be dead.

Once again, insanely stupid government rules KILL the people they are meant to protect.

Oh I agree. This is more of a “canary in the coal mine” kind of thing namely a comment on the stupidity of gun control especially in places of conflict (e.g., now Israel and large Democrat run cities, possibly more US cities soon),

Because I've seen pictures of all the Jewish settlers always carrying machine pistols
strapped to their backs, I assumed that was standard operating procedure. Evidently
I was wrong.

No they wouldn't. Most if not all venues like that do not allow CC. Unfortunate, but true.

This would be a good time to remind Israelis that gun control makes them safer, etc.

Maybe go door-to-door and confiscate weapons?

Only disagreement: The rules are not meant to protect. They are meant to make sure the government has a monopoly on power.

That’s insane.

I presumed they issued every Israeli family a semi-auto rifle and 600 rounds or so. What were they thinking??

Sometimes, 600 rounds isn’t enough. But it’s better than running for your life in vain or whatever. At least make the bastards pay a heavy price. Even Ghandi allowed that it would be “reasonable” to shoot back at someone who starts shooting.

Dint know. That’s what the article said, not me. But thought the illustration of gun control in Israel was worth noting. See one of my other comments above about “canary in the coal mine” too.

In America, owning a gun is a constitutional right. Here in Israel, owning a gun is a privilege. We have no constitution here.
