Phils' 'pen erases doubt after Thomson's early hook on Suárez

ATLANTA -- If you’d been paying attention to the American League Wild Card Series in Minnesota last week, there was likely a feeling of déjà vu when you saw Phillies manager Rob Thomson pacing out to the mound in the fourth inning of Game 1 of the National League Division Series on Saturday night at Truist Park.

Akin to the Blue Jays’ decision to pull starter José Berríos against the Twins, Thomson made the long walk to remove Ranger Suárez from his start vs. the Braves after just 3 2/3 innings. Suárez was yanked at the first sign of trouble after skating through the first three frames, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out four. The 28-year-old lefty was pulled after both Matt Olson reached on a seeing-eye single and Ozzie Albies got aboard via a fielder’s choice.

I don't understand current baseball managers. He pulled a guy pitching a shutout in the 4th inning, who had a no hitter the first 3 innings. Then they use 6 relievers. Doesn't that wear them out, and what if one of them is having a bad day. Why not keep a reliever in after pitching a perfect inning?

The Phillies have today off, and the braves haven't been shut out at home this year prior to last night, so I'm going to give Rob Thomson an A+ for his moves.

Everything turned up roses for the Phillies last night. Thompson made all the right moves as it turned out. I just hope he didn’t ruin Suarez’s confidence by pulling him early.

It’s a tough call, but the biggest mistake I see mangers make us keeping a guy in too long.

If you use 6 pitchers in 6 innings no one will get worn out.

I do agree if I had a pitcher with a shutout and and a no hitter I would leave him in as long as possible, plenty of built in rest for the playoffs and you only need two good relief pitchers.

Yeah, just look at how badly the Cubbies did in September. I still say David Ross needs to go. He can’t manage well at all.
