Russia is set to hold nationwide exercises early next month, according to new reports, in preparation for "the danger of armed conflicts involving nuclear powers."
Russian authorities will hold large-scale drills across the country on October 3 because of the "growing danger of armed conflicts including [with] nuclear-capable powers near Russia's borders," the Baza Telegram channel, which is linked to Russia's security services, reported on Thursday, citing the head of Russia's Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing, or Rospotrebnadzor.
This will be the first time that Moscow has held such drills, which will imagine that Russia is at least partially under martial law and that up to 70 percent of the country's housing facilities have been destroyed, the outlet reported. The exercises will also suppose that general mobilization has ended, and there is the possibility of radioactive contamination, Baza reported.
Leaders and officials from across Russian society, "from civil defense leaders to heads of state corporations," will take part in the drills, according to the report. However, the Ukrainian regions of Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson, that Russia annexed in September 2022, are exempt from the drills, Baza added.

Unlike the western powers, I don’t get the impression the russkies bluff much. They also have been very restrained in retaliating against NATO’s arming/training/funding the Ukes and bombing NS2/dams/nuclear plants.
I don’t think this is a just a ‘signal’ or bluster, but is actual “just in case” prep work. Not good, and maybe they know something our gov. is hiding from we citizens [just like they always do, and I fear is the case now]
The US is a technology trap, and our cities are the worst traps of all. We have integrated communications networks, running from land lines to cellular phones to air traffic control radios. We have mostly integrated electrical power networks. We have integrated pipeline networks for carbon-based fuels.
One EMP blast or a few small nukes could disrupt everything that people -- and government -- rely on for daily needs and order.
Russia is a Third World sh!thole with nuclear weapons. They lack much of the integration of infrastructure that America takes for granted. There are parts of Russia where horse or oxen power is still used to pull farm equipment.
The problem I raise is that in the event of nuclear war, primitive Russia will recover more rapidly than the US. They won't take as devastating a hit as we will. This is what causes me to lose sleep at night. We all say that nuclear war is unthinkable, but for Russia it is less of a gamble than for us.
WW3 is not far away.
Russia started the war in Ukraine. Period.
They want their empire back and are saying so on state media. Ukraine is just the first step if they can get away with it.
As I see it,
Step 1 is Civil Defense drills and shelter preparation.
Step 2 is resumption of Underground Nuke Testing.
Step 3 is resumption of Above Ground Nuke Testing.
...at that point, they’ll be ready to play hardball with us.
For the US, the same as the above, but we can skip Step 1, as we never took Civil Defense seriously.

We don’t have any infrastructure hardened to survive a nuclear war. That was by design.
Russia has that.
I don’t consider myself a neocon but I have speculated here how well maintained and reliable Russia’s strategic nuclear weapons might be. I point out the absurdity of maintaining a large nuclear triad here while seemingly kowtowing to Russia’s repetitive threats to go nuclear over the West’s provocations. F*ck Russia and Putin. Their threats are likely hollow. If they do fire nukes we are likely to really clobber them while admittedly taking casualties ourselves.
Is this such an impossible scenario? I advocate calling their bluff and let chips fall where they may. Just my two cents.
Russia could kill 10X the number we could kill because of our high population areas, especially on the eastern seaboard from Boston down to D.C. Russia is very spread out.
