This is exactly what Mark Steyn predicted in “America, Alone” back in 2006. He noted the declining and below-replacement birth rates in Europe.
I read that many young Italians leave Italy to find jobs.
It’s funny how the countries in Europe that take this issue seriously are the ENEMIES of the Western countries, nearly all of which have gone the population replacement route.

Russia has a declining population and one of the highest rates of abortion in the world. Hungary and France have failed in their pro-Natalist policies. Meanwhile, the UK is governed by a third world curry eater (Enoch Powell was right).

When Covid started, Italy had the oldest median population in Europe, and the second oldest in the world. We used the death rate in Italy, and in a nursing home in the northwest that was primarily for people who were in the very late stages of life, to provide unfounded tactics that healthy younger people would die from Covid.
WTH is wrong with modern countries that they can’t encourage people to have larger families so they don’t go out of existence?

I’d rather be a citizen of a country declining in native population than one which is inflating its population, intentionally or by passivity, with a population hostile to the natives. A slowly declining population need not be a problem - more room for young to have families and enjoy lower housing costs, less traffic, and lower taxation costs as well as a more pleasant living experience.
If Italy and other countries are worried perhaps they could do what Ireland and other countries have done -provide a citizenship path to those who can trace their ancestry to the country over recent generations. Bring home the disapora and their offspring.
Italy also offers citizenship to the "descendants of Italian citizens," but most people aren't moving back to Italy.
Ah yes, I see Italy also offers Citizenship By Descent. Still I can imagine a country so invaded would be less appealing to arrive in or stay. I saw how invaded northern italy was in 2011 - I doubt it improved since then.
