A pullback in lending among small banks in the U.S. was already underway before the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank. Now economists expect to see more tightening.
Why it matters: Stricter lending standards among smaller banks is likely to slow economic growth overall. But the commercial real estate sector, already battered by rising interest rates and half-empty office buildings, is particularly at risk.
The big picture: Big banks get a lot of attention, but there are about 4,800 banks in the U.S. — and the small ones play a large role in the economy, as a recent Goldman Sachs report notes.
Small and midsized banks, defined as domestically chartered banks not among the 25 largest, currently hold 67.2% of all outstanding commercial real estate loans, and 37.6% of loans overall. (h/t: Wall Street Journal for chart inspiration.)
These small players grease the wheels of the economy in all kinds of ways, particularly in specialized areas and regions. Think, Signature Bank's lending to Broadway or SVB's lending to startups.
As far as residential properties I think that will vary from state to state even county to county.
How bad to you see election fraud?
In the meantime, Poland is not sending any more aid after its fight with Zelensky over the grain deal. Germany has said it will not raise its defense spending (now 1.1%) to 2% of GDP any time soon. The winner of the recent Slovakian elections has promised not one more cent for Ukraine if he becomes the head of the government.
And the UK, one the more hawkish governments on Ukraine continues to see a decline it its military forces.
Given how bad everything is in the country, I suspect the vote against the Dems will be so high that not ever then fraud machine will be able to over come it.
2020 was unique with Covid for giving them multiple vectors to use for fraud
2024 not only will they not have nearly as many avenues of attack but they also are going to face a GOP campaign much more ready to fight it.
Their neighbors are not the same as their own people, no? Why conflate the two?
Ask yourself why didn’t Poland help the Czechs in 1938? Or the Swedes help Denmark and Norway in 1940? Europe has always had nations of complainers who do nothing when it involves their own treasure and lives. That is why we should stop funding everything for them. They need to finally stand on their own feet without Uncle Sugar Sam’s help.
However, why is it so hard to believe people will fight for their own country, and still that country has to draft people also? It has always happened in war.
I do not agree that the Ukrainians are evil. Maybe their leaders are, but the same is true for Russia and even the USA. Zelensky begs for money, but why shouldn’t he when every time he does, the West give in?
Cut the money and let’s see some negotiations.
In my opinion, the best outcome Ukraine will get is: Donbas to the Russians, Russia keeps Crimea, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia back to Ukraine, Russia pays for Ukraine damages via a tax on gas/fuel resold to Europe.
Even Ukraine war supporters say that’s too much, but in my opinion it is logical for them to accept these loses for the end of war. The idea that Russia will wait a few years and attack again is wrong. They’ve been hurt bad by this war, too. I’m not sure they’ll try again, given the blowback.
Of course, none of this will occur.
The war is in a yearlong stalemate. That won’t change.
I predict many more months if not years of the same.

Robert Kennedy Jr. to Run as Independent in 2024 Election
My thoughts are the same today as they were when we first discussed RFK Jr.
None of the Lightbringer’s supporters/voters and ballot harvesters are going to support RFK Jr. None of the leftists who follow social media or traditional media influence operations, the sheeple masses, are going to vote for RFK Jr. None of the party Democrats are going to vote for RFK Jr. None of the Gavin Newsom supporters are going to support RFK Jr. So, who will vote for RFK Jr?
ANSWER: Two core groups.
#1) Ron DeSantis supporters. When RdS drops out, his coalition of support, the Never Trump Republicans, will flow to RFK Jr.
#2) Approximately one-third of unregistered, unaffiliated or what we would call “independent” voters. About a third of them.
Independents will fracture into three subsets. Approximately 1/3 supporting Gavin Newsom. Approximately 1/3 supporting Donald Trump. Approximately 1/3 supporting Robert Kennedy Jr.
With DeSantis Republicans and one-third of independent voters, that’s the RFK Jr. coalition.
As I said from the outset, RFK Jr. is the intelligence community insurance policy against the threat of Donald Trump.
RFK Jr. running as an independent will tilt the election to Gavin Newsom.
Stop thinking about RFK Jr. taking votes from Biden. Unfortunately, this will be the narrative; this will be what is polled. However, Joe Biden will not be the DNC nominee.
The correct question is, what does RFK Jr. running as an independent do to the 2024 contest when it is Gavin Newsom -vs- Donald Trump?
In that scenario, the motives and intentions of RFK Jr. taking votes from Biden, because Joe Biden is a blithering idiot, disappears. Democrats will happily stick with Newsom…. which is exactly why his visibility is everywhere right now. It’s an op.
RFK Jr. running as an independent, is part of that op.
I really thought the same thing last year, but then more voting fraud occurred.
Lake should be Governor of Arizona, and Fetterman still in his mom’s basement. Nevada should have a GOP Governor and Senator. And so on and so on.
Alaska used ranked voting, a terribly anti-democratic system, to steal their only representation in the House for a people that is majority conservative/libertarian. Now Peltola, a democrat, represents them and votes exactly as Jeffries tells her.
My hope as well. If we don’t stop large portions of the fraud especially electronic, we can’t win.

I don't think so, at least in the short term. The rise of crime in the large cities is causing businesses to relocate and/or use work from home technologies that became widespread during Covid. Many employees don't want to go back to the old days. Even now, a significant portion of the federal workforce is still working from home.

Not all commercial real estate is in trouble. Office Tower are one category that is in trouble another is retail malls. One area that is growing is retail depots for the likes of Wallmart, Amazon and their likes. In Houston along the outer loop this type of construction is everywhere.

Ukraine has only been an independent country since December 1991. About 84 percent of eligible voters turned out for the referendum, and about 90 percent of them endorsed independence. Its borders have changed over the years.
In 2010 Yanukovych, a pro-Russian President was elected. He did not favor closer cooperation with NATO and the EU. The US/EU engineered a coup/revolution in 2014 that removed Yanukovych. This spawned the separatist movement in the Donbas and the current ongoing war. In 2014 Russia invaded unopposed and this led to annexation of Crimea.
It is worth noting that separatist movement is closely correlated to the Russian speaking areas of Ukraine and to the election of Yanukovych. Ukrainian nationalists wanted to eliminate Russian as one of the official languages of Ukraine.
I’ve been involved in several 3 way candidate races and the odds are tough calculus. It is hard to see from whom votes will be drawn abd to whom they will flow.
There is a growing appetite in the land to stop funding and starting endless wars. Bobby and Tulsi is there. Trump is waffling saying all ha wants is to stop the killing. He will not commit to stopping the Ukraine open checkbook, but lapses back into a lengthy “this war would never have happened if I were in office...”.
I am and always have been for Trump but he has to get his head out of the past and correctly select his lanes on the major issues that will be in play.
ABC Roundtable (Rachel Bade) suspects many Ds will have trouble defending their vote to save McCarthy’s speakership and will not.
How many is the determiner.
The wild card is Cornel West who says he will run as a Third Party candidate. He scares the Dems.
