The general leading Ukraine’s counteroffensive along the southern front line says his forces have broken through in Verbove – and predicts an even bigger breakthrough to come.
“On the left flank [near Verbove] we have a breakthrough and we continue to advance further,” Oleksandr Tarnavsky told CNN Senior International Correspondent Frederik Pleitgen during an interview on Friday, though he conceded his troops were moving slower than anticipated.
“Not as fast as it was expected, not like in the movies about the Second World War,” he said. “The main thing is not to lose this initiative (that we have). And, well, not to lose it in practice, with actions."
The general’s claim is the latest indication by Ukrainian officials that inroads are being made on the southern front in the war with Russia.

Not sure what you’re talking about. the Defense line that Ukraine broke through is identified as the Surovikin line. I would say that it looks like they’ve only penetrated the first TWO of what looks like THREE defensive lines, but this is DEFINITELY NOT the No Man’s Land. In fact, once they punch through the THIRD line, it’s pretty much wide open until Melitopol. I mean, I presume the Russians will expend mobile forces in places like Orkhiv, but these three lines ARE the big three defensive lines, and now two of three are gone.
Check with Colonel McGregor, though. He’ll be able to reassure you that the neo-Soviets will never get past Robotyne.
Except this isn’t WW1 and the Ukrainians aren’t in trenches, and they have moved through all the layers of the first defensive line.
And while some of us seem frozen in part of WW1, others remember that in fact the Great War ultimately saw a major advance which led to German surrender.
Some of you seem to think the US didn’t win WW1 and that the French and Germans are still in their trenches.
why would that area of Ukrainian advance look like a stalemate? That’s not what a stalemate is.

A deep salient is vulnerable to being “pinched off” through the base, and this will result in a pocket in which the forces in the salient become isolated and without a supply line. On the other hand, a breakout of the forces within the salient through its tip can threaten the rear areas of the opposing forces outside it, leaving them open to an attack from behind.

We did all right. After the French, Bits and Germans bled themselves white and killed off the flower of a generation, we walked in and "won." Not diminishing what we did, but please don't over sell it. Further, we also lost a lot of guys in the trenches before we did something different, which we could because the forces defending the trenches had pretty much exhausted themselves.
