The state of Mississippi saw cases of congenital syphilis rise 11-fold between 2016 and 2022, a new study by University of Mississippi Medical Center researchers shows, contributing to an already high rate of infant illness and death in the state amid a dire rise in cases of the deadly disease that has echoed across the nation in recent years
Researchers said the dramatic increase in the condition highlights the link between health, poverty and institutional racism in "fueling transmission of severe but preventable infections.”

Yet another article on an easily preventable condition without mentioning PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY. The article says severe but preventable but doesn't have the balls to say SO DON'T DO IT.
This is all such BS. Health, poverty, and/or institutional racism does not give you syphilis.

We need to stop babies from having conjugal visits in the womb.

I remember all the propaganda from my childhood. Don’t have sex you’ll get a disease. Don’t do drugs you will OD. Corporations are out to get you. All good advice but hyperbolic. The hyperbole is now gone.
I'd wager that's the crux of that 'statistic' for Whites.
This could have been ripped out of Huff's book How to Lie with Statistics. First, 70% were African American even though they are less than 13% of the population. Second the relative increase for white babies is larger because the starting number is smaller. For example, go from 5 babies with the disease to 30 babies is a 600% increase. However, start with 25 babies and increase the same 25 babies and it's only a 100 increase. The first statement almost guarantee that the second statistic is manipulated. Don't give us relative measures. Given us the raw numbers and we can figure the relative increases ourselves.

Suppose the start rate was 2 babies per 100,000 people then a 1000 Percent would be yield 20 babies per 100,000.
if you only had 18 additional babies infected in a population of 100,000 how scary is that?
Scary for the babies and moms yes, but not very scary to someone that can do arithmetic.
Demographics is destiny.
