“Humanity has opened the gates to hell,” Guterres said during the first-ever Climate Ambition Summit held on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly in New York on Wednesday.
Arguing that climate action is now being “dwarfed by the scale of the challenge,” Guterres described crops washed away by floods, the emergence of virulent diseases and the flight of communities from wildfires.
“Horrendous heat is having horrendous effects,” the secretary-general said.
Guterres stressed that the global target of limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) is still within reach. Countries set the 1.5-degree goal in the 2015 Paris Climate Treaty when they also agreed to a more lenient but binding commitment to keep warming below 2 degrees Celsius.
Guterres on Wednesday voiced his support for a Climate Solidarity Pact that would hold major emitters accountable, while urging wealthier countries to support emerging economies amid the ongoing climate crisis.
