Florida GOP scraps planned loyalty oath in win for Trump over DeSantis in their shared home state

The Republican Party of Florida on Friday night scrapped plans to require presidential candidates to sign a loyalty oath, siding with former President Donald Trump over Gov. Ron DeSantis in a proxy war that tested the strength of the two rivals’ support in their home state.

The party had quietly agreed in May to institute a pledge, mandating candidates promise to endorse the GOP nominee in order to make next year’s primary ballot

The vote by the state GOP’s executive committee took place during the organization’s quarterly meeting in Orlando (over successes)

Instead, the meeting exposed deepening divisions in the state party over its two presidential candidates. The outcome suggests that Trump maintains the upper hand over DeSantis in their shared home state.

The GOP should activate a brain cell and scrap these idiotic loyalty oaths in all states for all candidates in all primaries.

They are juvenile and serve no positive purpose for the candidates or the GOP.

Truth is, they will do what they want to. After all, who’s going to know if they kept or broke their promise?

True and it’s just one vote.

And if they’re talking about giving a show of support during the election season I have yet to hear a candidate brag about all the backing he’s getting from his primary opponents or complain that he isn’t.

Trump Beats DeSantis as Florida GOP Scraps ‘Loyalty Oath’ for Primary
The Messenger, Sep 15, 2023

In a rebuke to Gov. Ron DeSantis, the state party’s executive board Friday rejected his wishes and acceded to Trump’s by voting to scrap a newly instituted loyalty oath it wanted presidential candidates to sign in order to appear on the March 19 primary ballot.

The vote was another sign of Trump’s total dominance in the Republican primary over DeSantis, who is trailing him in Florida, early state and national polls by lopsided margins.

“This was huge. There was no need for this oath. It’s a big win for Trump and a big win for the Republican Party,” said state Sen. Joe Gruters, the Trump ally who pushed through the change.

The now-scrapped loyalty oath was born amid a push by the national political party to require candidates who appeared on its debate stage to pledge to back the eventual nominee. Trump won’t sign the national party loyalty oath and won’t debate DeSantis and his other primary rivals.

But DeSantis’s allies wanted the oath to remain because they said Republican Party candidates should affirm their loyalty to the GOP by agreeing they will back the party’s presidential nominee.

Gruters and other Trump supporters on the board, however, said the loyalty oath was added in May in contravention of national party rules that say no changes like this should be made within a two-year window of the election.

And since Trump didn’t want it, there was even less of a reason to keep the oath, Gruters said.

A DeSantis spokesman declined to comment. Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nunez and Florida House Speaker Paul Renner were also unavailable for comment after unsuccessfully lobbying the 39-member board to keep the oath intact.

The RNC is RINO heaven.

The oath was solely directed against Trump.

They wanted Trump to take it, hoping someone else would win the primary and wanted him to support whoever that would be.

But since he is in the obvious lead, they don’t want to hold other candidates responsible for supporting Trump.

Staying home on election day should always be an option. My loyalty is to ideas, political positions, and philosophy, not any group of "Ol' Boys Club" politicians, or "Grand Old Party." Look at what the Conservative Party in Great Britain has become.
