I try to learn something new every day and I learned a lot from this. I love Steinbeck but didn’t know this. Thanks for posting.

Daniel Greenfield, a Shillman Journalism Fellow at the David Horowitz Freedom Center, is a New York writer focusing on radical Islam and leftism.
Steinbeck’s support for the Vietnam War had infuriated the literary establishment and even though he had won the Nobel Prize and his acceptance speech became one of the most famous of its kind, he continued to be dismissed as an outdated fossil.
I had not heard about the Gosssteinbeck's in Israel or Mount Hope, but was vaguely aware about the US mission to the Ottoman Empire to revenge the Nablus massacre.
The story of John Steinbeck's visit to Israel in the 1960's is retold here by Mr. Greenfield, and posted in full.
Please read, it is an excellent history lesson.

As always, please FReepmail me if you want on or off the esteemed Daniel Greenfield ping list.

A horrifying, beautifully written and informative piece. Have read all of Steinbeck but did not know his back-history.
Thanks!

Did Steinbeck really write “a stinking past of heroic proportions” or did spellcheck change “striking” to “stinking”?

*have been a fan and reader of Steinbeck since reading ‘Of Mice and Men in junior high school.*
100 pages or so thereabouts. Easy to write a book report on it in 8th grade. The Pearl was another hundred pager. Steinbeck didn’t like successful people. I was sad to see Richard Harris play the bad doctor in The Pearl. Grapes of Wrath was a long summer read. East of Eden wasn’t as good. Travels with Charlie-loved it.

”Grapes of Wrath was a long summer read.” Grapes of Wrath is one of the books that one wishes he could read for the first time MORE THAN ONCE.
