Amulti-millionaire property developer from Australia has sparked fury for calling for unemployment to rise to 50 per cent while claiming workers became “arrogant” during Covid.
Gurner Group CEO Tim Gurner told the Australian Financial Review’s Property Summit that productivity had plummeted during the global pandemic as “people decided they didn't really want to work so much”.
“We need to see pain in the economy,” Mr Gurner told the summit on Tuesday, taking particular aim at the post-Covid work rates of construction labourers.
“We need to remind people they work for the employer, not the other way around.”
The inflammatory comments quickly went viral on social media as politicians and commentators lined up to condemn the CEO.
“Reminder that major CEOs have skyrocketed their own pay so much that the ratio of CEO-to-worker pay is now at some of the highest levels *ever* recorded,” Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez posted on X.
“This Gurner character personifies everything that is wrong with unfettered capitalism and the cult of the super-CEO: rampant greed and an arrogant contempt for working people,” Australian media commentator Mike Carlton wrote.
On LinkedIn, business leaders were equally indignant.
Spence Rodgers, CEO of Ihm Luxury, wrote that Mr Gurner’s assertion that he would rather “level personal pain on millions of workers in order to keep his own money flowing is the epitome of class warfare”.
“What words could I possibly use to describe someone so incredibly stupid, callous, fragile, and worthless?” Mr Rodgers added.

“Gurner Group CEO Tim Gurner.....”
This clown would last 10 minutes doing construction work on a day above 90° F
If you look at it like you are only aware and alive in this infinite universe for a brief moment.
Anyone who interferes with your pursuit of happiness should be taught a harsh lesson.
Some things are not negotiable.
I hope he is bitten by a brown snake and is still alive when an alligator begins to disembowl him alive.
He was saying that an increase of 40-50% in the unemployment rate (not an increase to 40 or 50%) to bring back employer bargaining power. He's tone deaf, and I think he has an idiotic view of the employer-employee dynamic, but he wasn't calling for a 50% unemployment rate as the headline suggests.
This guy has a future in politics.
100% what he said. But math is hard and a sensational headline sells better.
He may be on to something. We have obesity in this country. Lazy? One big complaint: Everyone wants something for nothing.
It’s the beauty of free speech. There’s a little bit of truth everywhere. Some places there’a a lot.
But he’s not wrong. People are so coddled these days, that they think manual work is beneath them. And it will stay that way as long as people get checks for doing nothing.
He’s not wrong about the ‘arrogant’ part.
Kids come out of college thinking they should waltz in as VP at 100k + per year.
Because they know so much.
I would wish that this AH had to work for, and live on, minimum wage the rest of his days.
Better yet, make him sleep in a cardboard box in an alleyway and dig in the trash for his food.
How do you know he didn’t when he was young?
The Aussie guy is just ticked off because when workers are ordered to do insane time eating commutes back into the crime-infested big city office they offer the middle finger instead.
He is probably deep into commercial real estate and banks with major commercial real estate exposure.
He is talking his book.
“We need to remind people they work for the employer, not the other way around.”
Seems someone has forgotten that the market is ruled by supply AND demand, not just one or the other.
Well just have open borders so you can flood the country with unemployed (and unemployable) people. That should drive down wages enough for our oligarchs
People will have plenty of time to scale the wall into your gated compound to get what they need.
Makes sense that a man with a name meaning “someone who makes an ugly and comical face” would wish unemployment TWICE that of the Great Depression on anyone.
Not his best movie, though.
Satan is the author of confusion
Perhaps some workers have become arrogant but so is this clown.
