A key ingredient in many over-the-counter cold and allergy medications called phenylephrine doesn’t work to get rid of nasal congestion, a Food and Drug Administration advisory panel concluded Tuesday.
The unanimous vote, which specifically declared oral formulations of phenylephrine ineffective, is expected to disrupt the market for OTC cold and allergy remedies, where consumers largely prefer pills over nasal sprays.
Phenylephrine — found in drugs including Sudafed PE, Vicks Sinex and Benadryl Allergy Plus Congestion — is the most popular oral decongestant in the United States, generating almost $1.8 billion in sales last year, according to data presented Monday by FDA officials.

It’s because they took the good ingredients out because people were cooking meth from it.
Put the good stuff back in.
Drug users, and drug producers/dealers, will always find a way.
Not the first time they have done this.
I wonder if the patent on this substance has or will soon expire.
I’ve always suspected that those decongestants are no better than placebos.
People take them because they feel like they need to do something. But just waiting out a cold is really the only thing anyone can do.
Humidifying the air (with a hot shower or a vaporizer device) is probably the best thing one can do for congestion.
“So now they are going after cold symptom medications so we can’t treat our colds and flu. “
Are you saying the FDA is wrong?
Pseudoephedrine aka Sudafed red tabs are the only thing that works to clear sinus congestion for me. The generic works fine but you have to show drivers license and depending on the pharmacist tech, you can be limited to one box of 24 or two boxes. 🙃
A couple of squirts of Afrin does the trick..almost like a miracle.
Stuff is physically addictive though use it sparingly.
So, the feds put pseudoephedrine (original Sudafed) behind the pharmacy counter, requiring photo ID and quantity purchased logs.
Phenylephrine is absolutely an inferior product for a nasal decongestant.
I buy real Sudafed whenever I remember and am at the pharmacy just so I have enough when the time comes that I need it.
I knew the OTC crap didn’t work. I thought it was just me.
Antihistamines have saved my butt from bee stings more than once.
P. S. If the Chinese ever do a remake of White Heat (I know, someone will say they should call it Yellow Heat, but not I), Ma Huang would be the perfect name for the maternal nutcase character.
It wouldn’t be the first time.
“It wouldn’t be the first time.”
What about this time ...
Jalapenos work for me....
;-)
Just go straight onto a ventilator.
This is true. Wasabi is the best; Chinese hot mustard works pretty well, too.
Vasoconstrictor, rather than vasodilator. Vasodilator reduces blood pressure.
The new stuff is useless for me.
An aside, I think they learned to make a new compound that is stronger than original meth cooked from Sudafed.
So now we have crappy decongestants, and druggies have better speed…
Actually theophylline is a bronchodilator, but it does seem to open up the sinuses (sini?) as well.
