Liberty Safe, which describes itself as “America’s #1 heavy-duty home and gun safe manufacturer,” has come under fire after a report revealed that its parent company has donated almost half a million dollars to pro-gun control Democratic officials.
On Wednesday, Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk shared FEC filings on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, that show Liberty Safe’s parent company, Monomoy Capital Partners, has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to Democrats.
“I pulled the FEC reports on the company and found approximately $400,000 over the last 10 cycles of max donations to Democrats,” Kirk wrote.

“Liberty Safe’s current CEO, Justin Hillenbrand, was a founding partner of Monomoy and donated $4,600 to Obama for America,” Kirk added.
In a news release Monomoy Capital issued announcing its acquisition of Liberty Safe in 2021, it called the move “another great example of Monomoy partnering with a branded, market leading, consumer products manufacturer that has garnered an enthusiast customer base throughout the company’s history.”

Among the many donations listed, the most notable were to Democratic Sens. Raphael Warnock of Georgia, John Fetterman of Pennsylvania and Mark Kelly of Arizona, and former Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes of Wisconsin – all of whom have expressed support for gun control.

Changing the locks on a new house has nothing to do with this.
If you buy a new car do you replace the ignition and get new keys cut? Nope.
This guy our used the safe. It was his. Liberty had no business doing what they did.

My last safe was special ordered with a mechanical dial lock. Seems they ship everything with electronic locks now.
Did not trust them, and ended up having my new lock “slip a wheel” and lock be out after a few months. Got it open with rubber mallet tapping and had a new dial installed.
They are EMP proof, but not absolutely faultless. Been thinking of getting a dual elect/mech lock.
yes, it is a Liberty and the tech set the combo of the new lock to the same as the original, which Liberty has, even for mech locks.
Are you saying the Combination is not user adjustable.
If so I would buy a different safe.
Yes, you can reset it, or have a locksmith do it.
On the news of Liberty getting cosy with the FIB, I am buying a combo reset tool and will change mine myself.
I recommend a safe with a mechanical dial lock. A locksmith can help you change these combinations.
1. The combination in question isn't the changeable user combination. It's a backdoor, and it's in every Liberty digital lock.
2. You can change the combination all you want, but the backdoor doesn't change.
3. Liberty has a database of these backdoors that is indexed by serial number, which is on the outside of the safe.
4. The FBI had a warrant for the property. A separate warrant is required to get into locked containers. What would be required to force a third party such as Liberty to intervene is a subpoena. Which they did not have.
5. Liberty's legal counsel could have told them the latter had they asked.
6. In response to this incident they have enabled (or are enabling) the customer to have them delete the customer's backdoor from their database. The customer is then on his or her own if he or she forgets or loses the combination.
7. How many safes share the backdoor they gave the FBI is not known.
8. One procedure to prevent this abuse is to remove the serial number from the exterior of the safe, storing it in a separate location. Obviously this will not prevent the FBI from trying the one they do have.
9. The owner is free to tell the FBI to pound sand. If they do have a warrant for the container they can then get in however they wish, but are liable for whatever damage they cause to the container should any occur. Good luck collecting, but it's the law.
You can, of course, have the digital lock swapped out for a mechanical one by a locksmith. At your expense, at least at the moment. Yes, this is a public relations disaster for Liberty. The NYT has already taken the line, "Hey, this is all normal and only a paranoid rightwing extremist could object." Which is pretty telling.

The worst thing I've read is that the Liberty company gives money to elect democrats. I'm certain the money is intended to buy protection; still, it shows company leadership is weak and worthless.
Gun owners should buy something better if they can afford it; if not, buy a cheaper steel box with a lock to store guns to keep the kids out.
Someone at The Conservative Treehouse suggested converting replaced refrigerators into gun safes.
Note that they may not meet state or insurance requirements.
They have the advantage of being real low cost.

Why the buyout? Was this a friendly or hostile takeover?

There has been a lot of discussion about Liberty Safes on The Conservative Treehouse.
The fact is the FBI will be able to get into any safe. The only question is will the safe have any value more than scrap metal after the FBI has gotten in.
Another example of how the "Technology Trap" is getting tighter by the day, and will eventually close in on us.
If the time comes guns may have to be buried.
The best place would be fairly high ground with good drainage.
There is such a thing as ground penetrating radar.
The gun would have to be packed in grease and probably in large diameter capped PVC.
Remember the federal government will know most purchases and you can’t be sure they don’t know about yours if purchased officially by you.
Be aware that guns of modest quality can be made by non-industrial folks, but ammunition is tougher to make and impractical to account for.

And...if a car came with an electronic combination to open the doors, I would only buy it if I could set the combination myself. Oh wait, you can do that......
