Earthquakes in divers places...
Marrakesh area is hardest hit. Likely more casualties in rugged mountain terrain nearby.
Prayers up
Ouch. I’ll bet that none of those historic buildings in Marrakesh or the rest of Morocco are reinforced.
People who live in zones where major earthquakes are rare tend not to prepare for them.
The earthquake that struck the DC area 12 years ago was only 5.8 and it did hundreds of millions of dollars in damages. Imagine what the toll would have been had it been as strong as the Morocco earthquake.
Thoughts and prayers for the people of Morocco.
6.8 is not that powerful of an earthquake.
The number of casualties is more due to the fact that it’s not considered an earthquake zone, so the buildings were not built with any reinforcements.
In comparison, the 6.9 Loma Prieta earthquake of 1989 in the Bay Area killed 63 people.
Plate tectonics is racist. Or something.
there shall be ...earthquakes in divers places Matthew 24:7
With houses made of mud and stones, collapses during a strong earthquake is expected.
Itchy Boots travelled thru Morocco about 6 months ago. The architecture doesn’t look too earthquake friendly.
