Commentary: California should mandate climate change education now
The Los Angeles Times ^ | September 6, 2023 | By Fred Smoller and Khang

Posted on 09/07/2023 5:29:04 AM PDT by Oldeconomybuyer

We see signs of climate change’s devastating impact all over Orange County — in rising sea levels in our coastal cities, such as in Seal Beach and Newport Beach; wildfires in Laguna Niguel and Silverado Canyon; coastal erosion in San Clemente ...

In response, Sacramento is implementing a slew of bold environmental laws and regulations. However, these much needed changes are unlikely to succeed without buy-in from the public. We need to raise the public’s comfort level with the drastic changes needed to combat climate change. People need to be convinced that a future in which their cars, houses, stoves and garden equipment run on electricity — and that they will need to live sustainably — will not mean a decline in their quality of life. Otherwise, there is going to be a political backlash that will undo these vitally necessary policies.

This effort must begin in school. That’s why California should mandate climate change education in grades K-12 right now.

When students comprehend the science behind climate change, the role of human activities, and the interconnection of ecosystems, they are better equipped to engage in constructive conversations about solutions. By exposing young minds to climate-related challenges and fostering critical thinking, we cultivate a generation that is passionate about environmental stewardship.

AB 285 needs to be passed by the legislature and signed by the governor right now. Education is key to addressing the climate emergency.

Poppycock. The super-majority Democrat legislature of California should add a surcharge to ALL Californina-based media of -- throwing out a number here for discussion -- $20 a month per subscription, and $1 per newspaper purchased at a stand, so that readers of the LA Times and the sister media in California collect from their loyal, oh-so-loyal subscribers money to be remitted back to the state's climate change efforts. It would allow all loyal Democrats to pay. And pay. And pay some more.....

...starting with the education lesson that it’s a fraud and then follow the money from there.

Keep it simple. Everyone should be shown graphs like this of the past few thousand years to see that our Modern Warm Period is nothing new under the sun.

IMHO when you get into details of what causes these cycles (and other longer term cycles), people's eyes glaze over.

At the swap meet at Newport Beach the LA Times had a booth and was trying to get subscriptions. I can’t repeat what I told them about their reporting and ethics.

Could not get past this first bit...

“We see signs of climate change’s devastating impact all over Orange County — in rising sea levels in our coastal cities, such as in Seal Beach and Newport Beach; wildfires in Laguna Niguel and Silverado Canyon; coastal erosion in San Clemente”

Rising sea levels are called “tide” and can radically change based on development and harbor use. Stop building there, problem solved.

Wildfires in both Laguna and Silverado Canyon have been a part of that landscape since before there was a single house built in the area. The indigenous used to purposely burn both canyons because they knew if they did not, nature would in the form of lightning strikes. Stop building there, problem solved.

San Clemente was a cute town with small, one-story cottages by the beach. They tore those out and replaced them with multi-story hotels and McMansions causing the erosion. Rip those out and the erosion will stop.

Lefty parasites took over all of those areas and upset the natural balance with their greed. Democrats destroy, destroy democrats.

The Times was trying to get subscriptions, for the actual printed newspaper? Given the steep decline of newspaper circulation in recent years, they are hawking papers at the swap meet.

So, you’re going to lie to the students.

There’s a VERY good reason I don’t read the LA Times - and haven’t in two decades when they really went “woke.”

I haven’t seen an LA Times on my neighbors’ driveways in YEARS - not a one, and I walk my dogs around the neighborhood every morning.

I remember as a kid being awakened by the thunk, thunk, thunk of the Sunday LA Times hitting people’s driveways.

No longer.

And that is not a bad thing.

What is astonishing is that ‘sea level rise’ is, apparently, very selective on where it happens - Archimedes Principle be damned.

Those “rising seas” have so terrified residents of Newport Beach and Laguna Beach that they are now selling their homes for pennies on the dollar....

Lol.
