Our legislature here in California could pass for something
from the old Soviet Union.
Since 1959, it has been under Democrat control almost
exclusively. In 1995/1996 it had a slim Republican majority
41/29 in the Assembly only.
In 1968 there was a 2020 match-up in the Senate only. This
happened again in 1973/1974.
In 1969/1970 the Republicans held another 41/39 majority.
So for the last 74 years, the Democrats have had the clear
majority for all but three years in the Senate, and two
years in the assembly.
In the 1995/1996 Assembly term, Willie Brown made political
moves that left the Republicans more or less powerless.
Right now there isn’t one single Republican leading a
statewide seat in California’s government. It’s been like
that for over 15 years as far as I can remember.
